Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Rochester Institute of Technology Dubai

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at RIT Dubai provides a broad engineering education that combines mathematics, physics, engineering science and systems analysis to prepare students for careers in industries such as aerospace, automotive, energy, robotics and manufacturing. It suits students who are strong in analytical thinking and problem-solving and want a balance of theoretical knowledge, hands-on laboratory work, design, and real-world engineering challenges.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students develop fundamental skills with courses in Calculus I & II, University Physics, and Engineering Mechanics Lab, building a strong base in mathematical reasoning and physical principles. Modules like Engineering Design Tools and Introduction to Mechanical Engineering introduce basic engineering concepts, drafting, and design thinking that are essential for later technical coursework.

Year 2:
The second year delves into core engineering disciplines with units such as Statics, Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics I, and Fluid Mechanics I, where students learn how materials respond to forces, how energy and heat interact in systems, and how fluids behave in motion. Complementary study in Engineering Measurements Lab and Dynamics help students apply theory to real mechanical problems and begin using analytical tools.

Year 3:
In year three, students tackle subjects like Heat Transfer, System Dynamics, and advanced Fluid Mechanics, continuing to deepen technical competence. At this stage, the curriculum integrates theoretical coursework with hands-on experience in labs and projects, preparing students for the practical aspects of mechanical engineering. Elective and immersion courses broaden perspectives and technical interests.

Year 4:
The final year focuses on synthesis and industry readiness through advanced modules such as Multidisciplinary Senior Design I & II, where students complete a capstone engineering project applying cumulative knowledge to complex, real-world design challenges. Cooperative education (co-op) work experiences provide extended time in professional environments, enhancing technical ability and employability while building professional networks.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students in the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at RIT Dubai gain hands-on practical skills through a curriculum designed around experiential-based education and a mandatory cooperative education program. Their skills are developed in state-of-the-art labs featuring tools like 3D printers and Universal Testing Machines, a comprehensive machine shop, and integrated laboratory activities from the very first year. This practical learning is structured as follows:

  • Experiential-Based Program Philosophy: The program's official mission is to provide experiential-based undergraduate education that enables graduates to contribute immediately to industry.

  • Mandatory Cooperative Education: Students complete a required professional cooperative education experience, integrating paid, full-time work terms with academic study.

  • Hands-On Laboratories and Tools: The labs are equipped for extensive experimentation, featuring 3D printers, Universal Testing Machines, and a comprehensive machine shop. Courses like Engineering Mechanics Laboratory and Strength of Materials I Laboratory are built around hands-on experiments.

  • Early Design and Build Projects: In the first year, the Engineering Design Tools course combines Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Machine Shop Fabrication in the context of a team-based design/build/test project.
