BSc in Environmental Health and Safety

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Abu Dhabi University

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health and Safety at Abu Dhabi University (ADU) is a 4-year multidisciplinary undergraduate program that prepares students to manage and protect human health and the environment by combining core science with applied occupational safety, environmental monitoring, and regulatory compliance. It suits students who want careers as environment, health & safety officers, occupational health specialists, environmental risk assessors, food safety inspectors, or sustainability consultants across industry, government, and community sectors.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Students begin with foundational scientific and environmental modules such as General Biology I & Lab, General Chemistry I & Lab, Introduction to Environmental Health & Safety (EHS 205), and Introduction to Environmental Science (ENS 205), which develop essential knowledge of ecosystems, human health interactions, and basic environmental science principles.

Year 2

In the second year, the program builds practical and managerial skills with courses like Environmental Health & Safety Management (EHS 206), Environmental Microbiology (EHS 210), Occupational Health & Safety (HSC 305), and Food Safety & Management (EHS 310), where students learn how to assess health risks, monitor hazards and design safety strategies for diverse settings.

Year 3

The third year deepens applied expertise through Waste Management (EHS 320), Hazardous Materials (EHS 420), Environmental Health Regulation & Compliance (EHS 415), Quality and Control of Water and Air Pollution (EHS 424), and Environmental Monitoring & Control + Lab (EHS 435 & EHS 435L), enabling students to evaluate environmental impacts and regulatory frameworks while gaining hands-on monitoring experience.

Year 4

In the final year, students integrate professional practice with Undergraduate Research (EHS 499) and a Professional Internship (EHS 399), where they apply cumulative knowledge to real-world health, safety and environmental challenges, preparing for industry roles and leadership opportunities.

Focus areas (in a string):

Environmental monitoring, occupational health & safety, waste & hazardous materials management, water and air quality control, food safety, sustainability

Learning outcomes (in a string):

Graduates will assess environmental health risks, implement safety management systems, apply regulatory compliance, monitor pollution, and communicate solutions effectively

Professional alignment (accreditation):

The program is accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education – Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) and linked with industry standards in environmental health and workplace safety.

Reputation (employability rankings):

Abu Dhabi University ranks among the top universities in the UAE and globally (Times Higher Education Top 250), giving graduates strong employability prospects in environmental, health and safety domains.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This hands-on approach is delivered through the following specific resources and activities:

  • Specialized Earth Sciences Laboratories: The program operates dedicated labs such as the Petrology and Mineralogy Laboratory, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Laboratory, Geochemistry Laboratory, and the Planetary Science and Remote Sensing Laboratory.

  • Mandatory Fieldwork and Mapping Camps: A core component of the program is compulsory geological field camps and mapping exercises. Students conduct fieldwork in diverse UAE environments such as the Hajar Mountains, desert regions (e.g., Liwa), and coastal sabkhas to study rock formations, structures, and surface processes.

  • Advanced University Core Facilities: Students use shared, high-tech facilities for analysis, including the Advanced Materials Characterization Lab (with SEM, XRD), the Central Analytical Laboratory, and the Micro/Nano Fabrication Facility.

  • Industry-Standard Software and Digital Tools: Students are trained in essential geoscience software, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software (e.g., ArcGIS), remote sensing platforms (e.g., ENVI), geological modeling software (e.g., Petrel, Leapfrog), and programming languages (Python, MATLAB) for data analysis.

  • Capstone Senior Research Project: A major senior design/research project requires students to conduct an original investigation, often involving field data collection, laboratory analysis, and computational modeling on a topic in geology, planetary science, or environmental geoscience.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of Abu Dhabi University's Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health and Safety develop expertise in workplace safety, environmental compliance, hazard management, and sustainability practices, preparing them to safeguard communities and industries across UAE's diverse sectors. Typical job roles include environmental health officer, safety manager, industrial hygienist, and compliance consultant.

Progression & Future Opportunities: ADU provides targeted career acceleration for EHS graduates:

  • Career Services Center offers industry-specific resume workshops, safety certification prep (OSHA/NEBOSH), and exclusive job fairs with Abu Dhabi industrial partners.

  • Strong employability (92%+ placement within 6 months) with starting salaries AED 14,000–24,000 monthly in oil/gas, construction, and manufacturing sectors.

  • Partnerships with ADNOC, AD Ports, and Emirates Steel secure internships, capstone projects, and priority graduate recruitment pipelines.

  • CAA-accredited program ensures lifelong MOHAP/ADDED recognition for senior EHS management across UAE/GCC industries.

  • Proven outcomes: graduates advance to EHS Manager roles (like Abu Dhabi Ports) and lead corporate sustainability initiatives within 3-5 years.

Further Academic Progression: Graduates pursue MSc Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Health, or Sustainability Management at ADU or regional universities, specializing in industrial hygiene or environmental risk assessment. Many advance to professional certifications (CIH, CSP) or PhD programs leveraging practical industry experience for regulatory/policy leadership roles.
