4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Gulf Medical University

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) at Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman is a 4-year, 133-credit healthcare degree designed to prepare students for professional practice as physiotherapists with strong clinical, analytical, and evidence-based care skills. It suits students who want to work in rehabilitation, movement-related healthcare, sports therapy, community health, and allied health professions, with a strong emphasis on clinical training and real-world practice.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In the first year, students develop foundational health and science knowledge through modules like Human Anatomy I & II, Human Physiology I & II, Biochemistry, Applied Physics, Patient Care and First Aid, and Epidemiology in Rehabilitation, as well as general education courses such as English Language and Behavioral Sciences & Ethics. These courses build the essential biological, physical and professional skills needed for physiotherapy practice.

Year 2

In Year 2, the focus shifts to core physiotherapy methods with modules such as Biomechanics I & II, Electrophysical Agents I & II, Therapeutic Exercise I & II, Physiotherapy Assessment and Evaluation, Manual Therapy, and Research Methods, supported by clinical practice modules like Clinical Education II & III that integrate hands-on skills with theory.

Year 3

The third year advances students into specialised fields including Physiotherapy in Orthopedics I & II, Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Disorders I & II, Neurosciences I & II, PT in Community Health I & II, and Evidence-Based Physiotherapy, alongside continued Clinical Education IV & V and emerging healthcare technology modules like Artificial Intelligence and Rehabilitation Technologies.

Year 4

In the final year, students consolidate professional practice with modules such as Physiotherapy in General Medicine, General Surgery and Geriatric Conditions, Sports Physiotherapy, PT in Women’s Health and Pediatrics, Physiotherapeutic Reasoning, Research Project I & II, and extensive Advanced Clinical Practicum, enabling graduates to integrate clinical expertise with evidence-based, patient-centred care.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This clinical training is structured through the following specific components:

  • Specialized Physiotherapy Laboratories: Students train in labs such as the Clinical Skills and Simulation Lab, Musculoskeletal Assessment & Rehabilitation Lab, Neurological Rehabilitation Lab, Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy Lab, and Hydrotherapy Pool.

  • Clinical Therapeutic Equipment: Labs are equipped with modern tools including electrotherapy units (TENS, ultrasound, laser), traction tables, continuous passive motion (CPM) machines, balance and proprioception training systems (Biodex, Balance Master), gait analysis equipment, and strength training apparatus.

  • Mandatory Clinical Placements (Internships): Students complete multiple, full-time clinical placements across different healthcare settings. These typically include rotations in public and private hospitals, orthopedic and sports clinics, neurological rehabilitation centers, pediatric units, and cardiorespiratory wards under the supervision of licensed physiotherapists.

  • Simulation-Based Learning: The Clinical Skills and Simulation Laboratory uses high-fidelity patient manikins and standardized patients to practice assessment, manual therapy techniques, and emergency response in a controlled environment before working with real patients.

  • Interprofessional Education (IPE): The curriculum includes IPE activities where physiotherapy students collaborate with medical, nursing, and pharmacy students on simulated patient cases to develop team-based care skills.
