Bachelor of Science in Public Health and Nutrition

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Zayed University

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Public Health and Nutrition at Zayed University (ZU) combines scientific principles with applied knowledge in public health and nutrition to prepare students to promote health, prevent disease, and improve community wellbeing. It suits students who want careers in health promotion, community nutrition, public health policy, food safety, and clinical support roles, learning how nutrition influences health and how to design and manage health-related programs.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In the first year, students build foundational skills in scientific reasoning, communication, and quantitative analysis, taking courses embedded in general education that support future health studies while also starting Principles of Nutrition I and Public Health I. They begin to understand the biological and social contexts of health and nutrition, establishing the base needed for advanced study of public health issues and human nutrition.

Year 2

During the second year, students deepen core health knowledge with Principles of Nutrition II, Public Health II, and courses in Environmental Science and Statistics, enhancing their ability to assess health determinants and environmental influences on population wellbeing. This year is pivotal for linking nutrition science with broader public health concepts, including population-level disease prevention and health promotion strategies.

Year 3

By the third year, students advance into specialised health science and nutrition modules such as Human Physiology, Nutrition Across the Lifespan, Diet Planning and Assessment, and Introduction to Epidemiology, reinforcing their scientific expertise and practical skills for analysing health data and tailoring nutrition interventions. They also begin to engage with Community Health and Nutrition, integrating concepts of health equity and community-based practice.

Year 4

In the final year, students undertake applied and professional experiences with courses such as Food Science, Food Sanitation and Hygiene, Research Methods, and Medical Nutrition Therapy I, alongside a Senior Project and an Internship in Public Health and Nutrition. These experiences allow them to synthesise scientific knowledge with real-world health and nutrition practice while building communication, research, and leadership skills.

Focus areas (in a string):

Public health principles, nutrition science, epidemiology, diet planning and assessment, community health, food safety and hygiene, research methods

Learning outcomes (in a string):

Apply scientific methods to assess population health and nutrition needs, design and evaluate nutrition-related interventions, communicate health information effectively, conduct evidence-based research, and engage in ethical, culturally competent practice

Professional alignment (accreditation):

The program is accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education – Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), ensuring it meets national quality standards for health sciences and nutrition education.

Reputation (employability rankings):

Zayed University is a leading public UAE university with broad academic recognition; its graduates in sciences and health are prepared for roles in hospitals, ministries, community organisations, and private sector health services, supported by the institution’s strong UAE and regional reputation

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This hands-on approach is delivered through the following specific resources and activities:

  • Specialized Earth Sciences Laboratories: The program operates dedicated labs such as the Petrology and Mineralogy Laboratory, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Laboratory, Geochemistry Laboratory, and the Planetary Science and Remote Sensing Laboratory.

  • Mandatory Fieldwork and Mapping Camps: A core component of the program is compulsory geological field camps and mapping exercises. Students conduct fieldwork in diverse UAE environments such as the Hajar Mountains, desert regions (e.g., Liwa), and coastal sabkhas to study rock formations, structures, and surface processes.

  • Advanced University Core Facilities: Students use shared, high-tech facilities for analysis, including the Advanced Materials Characterization Lab (with SEM, XRD), the Central Analytical Laboratory, and the Micro/Nano Fabrication Facility.

  • Industry-Standard Software and Digital Tools: Students are trained in essential geoscience software, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software (e.g., ArcGIS), remote sensing platforms (e.g., ENVI), geological modeling software (e.g., Petrel, Leapfrog), and programming languages (Python, MATLAB) for data analysis.

  • Capstone Senior Research Project: A major senior design/research project requires students to conduct an original investigation, often involving field data collection, laboratory analysis, and computational modeling on a topic in geology, planetary science, or environmental geoscience.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of Zayed University's Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Sustainability develop interdisciplinary expertise in ecology, resource management, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable policy solutions, equipping them to tackle UAE's environmental challenges through research-driven and practical approaches. They excel in analyzing climate impacts, waste management, and energy systems for sustainable development across government, NGO, and private sectors. Typical job roles include environmental scientist, sustainability consultant, conservation officer, and policy analyst.

Progression & Future Opportunities: ZU's career ecosystem ensures strong environmental graduate outcomes:

  • Career Services and Internship Office provide sustainability-focused job fairs, EAD/MOE placement support, CV clinics, and professional networking events with environmental agencies.

  • Excellent employability (93%+ within 6 months) with starting salaries AED 13,000–22,000 monthly in UAE government/private sustainability roles.

  • Partnerships with Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), Ministry of Climate Change & Environment, and Masdar ensure field research placements and graduate recruitment pipelines.

  • CAA-accredited program guarantees long-term recognition across GCC for leadership in environmental policy and sustainability management.

  • Proven outcomes: graduates lead conservation projects, sustainability audits, and green policy initiatives within 3-5 years.

Further Academic Progression: Graduates pursue ZU's MSc in Environment and Sustainability Sciences or international MSc/PhD programs at universities like Imperial College London/ETH Zurich, specializing in climate policy, renewable energy systems, or biodiversity management. Many advance through ZU research centers to doctoral studies or UN agency roles, leveraging capstone projects and field experience for global environmental leadership positions.
