BSc in Biomedical Sciences: Laboratory Medicine

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Abu Dhabi University

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences: Laboratory Medicine at Abu Dhabi University (ADU) is a four-year interdisciplinary undergraduate degree that equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills in areas such as clinical biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, and molecular diagnostics. It suits students who aim for careers in medical laboratory science, healthcare diagnostics, research, and allied health professions, providing hands-on experience through labs and internships with medical centres and diagnostic facilities.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students build strong scientific foundations by taking introductory science and health courses that develop critical knowledge of living systems and medical contexts. Through units in Basic Medical Microbiology and Biochemistry Fundamentals, learners become familiar with cellular structures, metabolic pathways, and essential laboratory practices. They also acquire academic skills in communication and science reasoning that support future learning and clinical practice.

Year 2:
The second year deepens core diagnostic and biomedical competencies with courses such as Clinical Biochemistry I, Immunology I, and Quantitative Analysis, which introduce biochemical testing, immune system evaluation, and analytical techniques. Through Bioinformatics and Biotechniques, students gain exposure to computational tools and laboratory methods used in modern biomedical investigations. This stage emphasis bridges theory with practice and prepares students for more complex clinical concepts.

Year 3:
In the third year, learners engage with advanced clinical and pathological studies, including Metabolic Diseases I & II, Immunology II, Histopathology, and Haematology I, exploring disease mechanisms, tissue analysis, and blood diagnostics. These units expand students’ diagnostic reasoning skills and methodological precision while reinforcing understanding of disease-related laboratory interpretations. This year also encourages professional practice skills that align with real healthcare settings.

Year 4:
The final year emphasises mastery and professional readiness with courses like Clinical Laboratory Management, Clinical Biochemistry II, and Haematology II, where students build expertise in lab operations, complex biochemical assays, and haematological diagnostics. The Biomedical Science Research Report and Biomedical Science Placement I & II (internships) provide opportunities to synthesize learning through independent research and hands-on work in clinical environments. These experiences culminate in a comprehensive laboratory science education ready for career entry or graduate study.

Focus areas (in a string):

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This hands-on learning is delivered through specific resources and program structures:

  • Core Biological Laboratories: Students train in specialized labs such as the Cell & Molecular Biology Laboratory, Microbiology & Immunology Laboratory, Genetics and Genomics Laboratory, Plant Physiology Laboratory, and Ecology & Environmental Biology Laboratory.

  • Advanced Research Facilities: Access is provided to core university facilities like the Central Biotechnology Laboratory, Advanced Imaging and Microscopy Facility, and DNA Sequencing Facility for student research projects.

  • Mandatory Fieldwork and Trips: The curriculum includes compulsory field trips to local ecosystems including desert wadis, mangrove forests (e.g., Eastern Mangroves), coastal regions, and mountain (Hajar) habitats. The UAEU Field Station is used for extended ecological research.

  • Industry-Standard Instruments and Software: Labs are equipped with instruments like PCR machines, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, and microscopes. Students use bioinformatics software (e.g., for DNA sequence analysis), statistical packages (SPSS, R), and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for ecological mapping.

  • Capstone Senior Research Project: A major senior research project requires students to conduct original, independent investigation in a chosen biological sub-discipline, often utilizing the advanced research facilities.

  • Professional Internship (Practical Training): Students complete a mandatory practical training internship with partners such as research institutes (e.g., Khalifa Center for Genetic Engineering), environmental agencies (EAD), hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, or agriculture centers.

Progression & Future Opportunities
