Bachelor of Arts in International Relations

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Abu Dhabi University

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in International Relations at Abu Dhabi University (ADU) is a 4-year undergraduate degree that equips students with theoretical understanding and practical skills to analyse global politics, diplomacy, foreign policy, and international governance. It suits students interested in careers in diplomacy, international organisations, policy analysis, and global affairs, offering tailored electives and a strong foundation in global systems and intercultural relations.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students build a broad foundation in political and global studies with core courses that may include Introduction to International Relations, Global Politics, and World History (typical foundational units in IR programs). They learn key concepts about state systems, political structures, and global power dynamics, while also developing academic research and communication skills essential for later analysis of international affairs. This year often integrates general education courses that strengthen critical thinking, writing, and ethical reasoning in a global context.

Year 2:
In the second year, the curriculum deepens analytical skills with modules such as International Political Economy I & II, Comparative Political Systems, and International Law, enabling students to examine how political and economic forces shape global relations. Students begin to understand the legal frameworks governing global actors and analyse different political systems comparatively, cultivating a nuanced perspective on how governments interact on the world stage. Elective options like Public Diplomacy or Cross-Cultural Psychology allow students to tailor their learning toward specific interests in diplomacy or societal dynamics.

Year 3:
The third year focuses on advanced themes in international relations with courses such as Diplomacy and International Relations, International Crime and Justice, and Human Rights and Global Justice. Here, students engage with real-world issues including conflict resolution, human rights protections, and the ethics of global governance. They also explore global diplomatic strategies and deepen their understanding of international crime’s impact on global policy, preparing for professional work or internships.

Year 4:
In the final year, students synthesise their learning through practical and applied experiences such as the Internship (INR 499), where they gain workplace exposure in governmental or non-governmental organisations. Advanced electives and capstone projects encourage independent research and specialised coursework, such as Technological Innovation and Diplomacy or Comparative Criminal Justice Systems, allowing students to refine their expertise in areas aligned with career goals. This year emphasises professional readiness, strategic planning, and leadership skills relevant to international careers.
