4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

New York University Abu Dhabi

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (B.A.I.S.) at American University in Dubai (AUD) is a four-year interdisciplinary degree that equips students with analytical, research, and communication skills to understand global challenges and shape solutions across politics, culture, economy, and society. It suits students passionate about careers in diplomacy, international organisations, policy analysis, development, and global leadership, offering a blend of core theory and specialised track options.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students establish foundations in global perspectives with core units such as Introduction to International Studies, Global Politics, and World History (typical introductory courses in the AUD program), which help them understand how societies and political systems operate in a globalised world. They also complete Arts & Sciences Core courses in writing and critical thinking, strengthening communication and analytical skills crucial for interpreting international affairs. This year encourages interdisciplinary learning by connecting history, politics, and culture.

Year 2:
In the second year, learners deepen their understanding of how global systems interact via courses like International Political Economy, Comparative Politics, and International Law, gaining tools to analyse economic, legal, and political forces shaping international relations. Electives such as Cultural Anthropology or Regional Studies allow exploration of social and cultural contexts, enriching students’ perspectives on diversity and cross-cultural dynamics. This stage also builds research awareness and methodological skills essential for advanced coursework.

Year 3:
The third year focuses on specialised global themes with courses such as Diplomacy and Foreign Policy Analysis, Global Development, and Human Rights and International Justice, encouraging students to examine substantive issues in international relations. Through these units, students enhance critical thinking and apply conceptual frameworks to real-world challenges like policy responses to humanitarian crises and strategies for sustainable development. Options to tailor the program through track electives in International Relations, International Development, or Middle Eastern Studies allow learners to align studies with their career interests.

Year 4:
In the final year, students synthesise knowledge in advanced seminars and complete a Capstone Project that demonstrates their ability to investigate complex global issues independently, often drawing on interdisciplinary insights. Tracks such as Geopolitics of the Middle East or International Security deepen regional or thematic expertise, while electives and possible internships prepare students for professional roles or graduate study. This year emphasises professional readiness, strategic thinking, and advanced analytical competence.
