This four-year degree combines the science and technology behind food with practical business insights, giving you the skills to innovate and improve food products. A dedicated industry placement year lets you gain real-world experience, helping you connect what you learn in class with actual work in the food industry.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you’ll get a strong foundation in food science and the broader life sciences. You’ll explore Food Science and Chemistry of Foods, learn how our bodies work through Human Anatomy and Physiology, and dive into Genetics, Immunology, and Biochemistry. Alongside this, Consumer Behaviour and Market Research introduces you to how people make choices about food.

Year 2

Year two builds on this foundation with more hands-on and advanced learning. You’ll study Food Microbiology and Preservation Techniques, Food and Sensory Analysis, and New Product Development, gaining practical lab and analytical skills. Modules like Food Business Innovation & Entrepreneurship and Professional Development also prepare you for the workplace. A Research Project helps you practice designing and running real experiments.

Year 3 – Industry Placement

This year is all about getting out into the real world. You’ll spend time in an industry placement, applying your knowledge, developing professional skills, and understanding how the food industry really works.

Year 4

In the final year, you’ll tackle more advanced topics and focus on preparing for your career in food science and technology. This is where everything comes together, from practical skills to research and professional development.
