The BA (Hons) Architecture (Placement Year) at Lancaster University is a four‑year programme that combines rigorous studio training with a full year of professional experience in the architecture sector. Curriculum Structure

Year 1
The first year lays the groundwork with core design studios: Architectural Design Studio 1A and 1B, where students learn to visualise spatial ideas and engage with materials, site, and human context. Alongside, they study Architectural Humanities 1, introducing architectural history and theory, and Architectural Technology, gaining fundamental knowledge of materials, structure, and building systems. This balanced beginning helps students develop both creative thinking and technical literacy.

Year 2
In the second year, students push their design skills further in Architectural Design Studio 2A and 2B, working on more complex briefs and community‑engaged projects. They also take Architectural Humanities 2, exploring modern and contemporary architecture theory and urban planning, and Architectural Technology & Professional Skills, which integrates technology learning with a focus on sustainability, ethics, and professional responsibilities.

Year 3 (Placement Year)
The third year is dedicated to a Work‑Based Learning (placement) module where students spend 9–12 months working in a real architectural practice or related organisation. This placement gives them hands-on professional exposure, builds their CV, and helps them develop practical skills like project management, client communication, and technical execution. They remain Lancaster students during this year, with support from the Careers and Placements Team.

Year 4
Back at Lancaster for the final year, students complete Architectural Design Studio 3A and 3B, in which they take on ambitious design projects that integrate environmental strategy, user experience, and context. They also study Integrated Technology, consolidating their technical knowledge, and Professional Practice, where they learn about ethics, regulation, and the business of architecture. Architectural Humanities 3 encourages critical reflection on architecture’s future and may include a dissertation-style component.
