Architecture (Study Abroad) BA Hons

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Lancaster University

Program Overview

The BA (Hons) Architecture – Study Abroad at Lancaster University is a four‑year degree combining design studio practice with an international year at one of Lancaster’s partner universities. It suits students seeking global exposure, creative collaboration, and an understanding of architecture across different cultural and environmental contexts.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Students begin with core studio work in Architectural Design Studio 1A, learning to visualise and communicate architectural space using both analogue and digital techniques. Architectural Design Studio 1B introduces site analysis, materiality, and the social and cultural aspects of space. Complementing this, Architectural Technology focuses on building materials, structural principles, and passive design, while Architectural Humanities 1 covers architectural history, urbanism, and environmental theory.

Year 2

The second year builds on technical and conceptual foundations. Students advance their understanding of building systems, sustainability, and emerging construction methods through advanced Architectural Technology modules. Studio projects increase in complexity, while Architectural Humanities 2 engages students with modern and contemporary theory, planning, and urban design.

Year 3 (Study Abroad)

During the third year, students spend a full academic year at an international partner university. They select specialist modules such as Advanced Technology & Professional Skills, Architectural Humanities, Design Studio, and Professional Practice, gaining global architectural perspectives. Grades from this year are credited back to Lancaster, contributing directly to their BA degree.

Year 4

Returning to Lancaster, students complete Architectural Design Studio 3A and 3B, working on complex projects that integrate environmental strategies and regulatory requirements. Integrated Technology & Practice consolidates technical knowledge alongside design, and Professional Practice covers legal, ethical, and planning frameworks. Architectural Humanities – Future Practice allows critical examination of architecture’s future, often via dissertation-style research.

Focus Areas

Sustainability and climate-responsive design, digital and material innovation, global architectural perspectives, professional ethics and regulation, architectural history, and cultural context.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates can design creative, environmentally responsible architecture, communicate ideas through advanced technical and visual media, evaluate building technology and regulatory systems, think critically about architecture in a global context, and understand professional practice and ethics.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

Validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) at Part 1 level and aligned with the Architects Registration Board (ARB), preparing students for the next step in professional qualification.

Reputation (Employability & Rankings)

Lancaster’s architecture program ranks highly for student satisfaction and is among the top programs in the UK in national guides. Students benefit from strong regional partnerships and live project opportunities, enhancing practical experience and employability.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The Architecture (Study Abroad) course at Lancaster University offers a deeply immersive, design-led education with international exposure. Students spend the first two years at Lancaster, building a strong foundation in design, technology, and professional practice. In the third year, they study at one of Lancaster’s international partner universities, taking specialist modules aligned with their architectural interests, before returning for a fourth year to consolidate their degree and complete a major design thesis.

Students engage with live design projects, sustainable and future-focused challenges, and studio-based work. Field trips, workshops, and intensive design charrettes support hands-on learning, while individual tutorials provide guidance to develop a strong personal design voice.

Experiential Learning Highlights:

  • Studio-based projects simulating professional architectural practice.

  • Design projects addressing local and international contexts.

  • Summer design charrettes with collaborative, intensive problem-solving.

  • One-to-one tutorials with academics and practising architects.

  • Professional mentoring and short placements in architectural practices.

  • International study year at a partner university.

  • Research collaboration with ImaginationLancaster on technology, sustainability, and social design projects.

Facilities & Tools

Lancaster University provides modern, creative, and technically rich facilities for architecture students:

  • Dedicated design studios with personal workstations.

  • Workshops and fabrication labs with 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC routers.

  • VR equipment for immersive exploration of architectural designs.

  • Digital infrastructure including specialist architectural software for modelling, BIM, and digital representation.

  • Model-making and representation workshops for both manual and digital fabrication.

  • Library resources covering architecture, design, theory, and building technology.

  • Campus facilities in both historic and contemporary buildings, including the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts.

  • A sustainable, green campus environment that encourages ecological and environmental design thinking.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of this course go on to roles such as Architect (Part 1), Urban Designer, Sustainable Designer, and Spatial Consultant. Thanks to the study‑abroad year, students develop a global outlook, build international networks, and gain hands-on design experience that sets them apart in the architecture profession.

Key Strengths & Graduate Outcomes:

  • University Services that Support Employability

    • Students have access to a dedicated 24/7 studio space, enabling them to work like in a professional practice.

    • The Careers and Employability Service offers mentoring, networking events, and support in finding placements or internships.

    • Through ImaginationLancaster, students collaborate with public and private organisations on real projects — a major boost for their CV.

  • Employment Stats & Career Paths

    • The degree aligns with common architectural career outcomes: architectural assistant, urban designer, and construction manager.

    • The course provides Part I level accreditation for the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), essential for pursuing a master’s (Part II) and eventually qualifying as a chartered architect.

  • University–Industry Partnerships

    • Students engage with local architectural practices and participate in the RIBA North West Student Mentoring Scheme, gaining first-hand professional insight and mentorship.

    • Past collaborations through ImaginationLancaster include organisations like UNESCO and local heritage institutions, giving students a rich variety of project experiences.

  • Accreditation & Long-Term Value

    • The BA (Hons) Architecture is validated by RIBA at Part I level, recognised for the first stage of professional architectural training.

    • This accreditation provides a strong foundation to progress to a Master’s (MArch) and complete the full architect qualification pathway.

  • Graduation Outcomes

    • Graduates often continue into postgraduate study (MArch) to complete Part II and become fully qualified architects.

    • Some graduates also branch into urban design, interior architecture, property development, project management, or sustainable design, thanks to the breadth of skills gained during the degree.

Further Academic Progression:

  • After completing this BA, students can pursue a Master of Architecture (MArch) to complete RIBA Part II, required to become a fully qualified and registered architect.

  • Alternatively, students could pursue research degrees (MPhil / PhD) in architecture, design technology, sustainability, or urbanism, supported by ImaginationLancaster’s research network.

Why This Course Is Particularly Compelling:

  • Global Perspective: The compulsory year abroad broadens cultural and architectural understanding.

  • Sustainability-Driven Curriculum: The course emphasises climate-conscious, ethical, and future-focused design.

  • State-of-the-Art Facilities: Students have access to advanced digital fabrication tools — 3D printers, laser scanners, CNC routers — and a purpose-built design studio.

  • Research-Driven Innovation: ImaginationLancaster projects allow students to work on speculative and applied design challenges that address real-world problems.

  • Strong Professional Framework: With RIBA accreditation and structured professional mentoring, students gain both creative education and a clear pathway to becoming an architect.
