Architecture BA Hons

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Lancaster University

Program Overview

The BA (Hons) Architecture at Lancaster University emphasises sustainability, ethical design, and real‑world problem-solving through a studio-led, design-driven curriculum. It is ideal for students who want to learn architecture in a creative, socially responsible environment with access to professional-level facilities and research.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Students engage with Architectural Design Studio 1A and 1B, learning to draw, model, and conceptualise architectural space while responding to site context and user needs. Alongside, Architectural Humanities 1 introduces architectural history, theory, and environmental thinking, while Architectural Technology covers building materials, structures, and sustainable construction. This year builds a strong base in design, technical understanding, and critical thinking.

Year 2

In the second year, studio work continues through Architectural Design Studio 2A and 2B, focusing on more complex design challenges, live projects, and integration of environmental strategies. Architectural Humanities 2 explores modern and contemporary architecture, planning theory, and the interaction between architecture and society. Architectural Technology & Professional Skills deepens technical knowledge and teaches professional ethics, regulatory issues, and sustainability.

Year 3

In the final year, students complete Architectural Design Studio 3A and 3B, tackling advanced, independent design briefs. Integrated Technology consolidates knowledge of building systems, detailing, and environmental design integration. Professional Practice prepares students for the professional world with legal, ethical, and project management skills. Architectural Humanities 3 (Future Practice) allows critical reflection on architecture’s future, often through a dissertation-style project.

Focus Areas

Sustainable architecture, environmental technology, professional ethics and regulation, historical and critical perspectives, real-world design projects, and building systems.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will be able to produce creative, context-aware architectural designs; analyse architectural history and theory; apply building technology and environmental strategies; communicate design ideas effectively; and understand professional practice and ethical responsibilities in architecture.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The BA (Hons) Architecture is accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) at Part 1 level and aligned with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) requirements, supporting progress toward a professional architecture career.

Reputation (Employability & Rankings)

Lancaster’s architecture programme is highly ranked in national guides for student satisfaction. The course incorporates live projects and sustainability research, providing practical experience and strong employability prospects.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The Architecture BA (Hons) at Lancaster University provides a creative, practice-based education with sustainability at its core. Students work in design studios from day one, collaborating with peers on live or speculative projects that challenge them to think about materials, context, environment, and future climates. The teaching team is a mix of researchers and practising architects, so coursework draws directly from current architectural thinking.

Experiential learning is built into the curriculum:

  • Participation in live design projects, often with real clients or community stakeholders, giving practical experience in design, collaboration, and social value.

  • Charrettes (intensive design workshops) where students collaborate to generate, test, and present ideas under time constraints.

  • One-to-one tutorials with tutors provide personalised feedback to develop individual design skills and architectural voice.

  • Field trips and site visits help students engage with architecture in context — exploring historic, rural, and urban landscapes.

  • Engagement with Lancaster’s research lab (ImaginationLancaster), contributing to live research projects in technology, sustainability, and social design.

Facilities & Tools

Lancaster University provides modern infrastructure to support architecture students:

  • Design studios: Personal workstations in a collaborative studio open throughout the day, simulating a professional office environment.

  • Workshops & fabrication labs: Access to 3D printers, CNC routers, laser cutters, and large-format printers for prototyping and model-making.

  • Digital design software: Industry-standard tools for modelling, BIM, rendering, and digital representation.

  • Immersive technology: Resources for digital crafts, rapid prototyping, and emerging design technologies.

  • Campus teaching spaces: Classes are held in both historic and modern buildings, including the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts.

  • Green campus environment: Woodland, gardens, and green spaces inspire ecological and environmental design thinking.

  • ImaginationLancaster research lab: Students collaborate on socially and technologically driven projects with academic supervision.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from this BA often go into roles such as Architectural Assistant, Urban Designer, Sustainable Designer, or Project Manager. With a curriculum rooted in sustainability and real‑world design, students develop creative, ethical, and technical skills that make them highly employable by practices that care about future-focused architecture.

Key Strengths & Graduate Outcomes:

  • University Services That Support Your Growth

    • Students have 24/7 access to a dedicated design studio, mirroring a professional practice environment.

    • The Lancaster School of Architecture is staffed by academics and practising architects, so students learn from people actively working in the field.

    • There are live‑project opportunities with real clients, plus “charrette” summer schools to build teamwork experience.

  • Career Paths & Employment Potential

    • Common roles after graduation include architectural assistant, urban designer, interior architect, computational designer, and sustainability consultant.

    • Median salary for Architecture graduates: ~£23,135 at 15 months, rising to ~£28,475 by 5 years.

  • Industry Engagement & Partnerships

    • Through their design-research lab, ImaginationLancaster, students collaborate with public and private organisations on sustainability-driven architecture research.

    • Students benefit from mentoring and connections to architectural practices, including regional networks via the RIBA North West Chapter.

  • Accreditation & Professional Value

    • The BA (Hons) Architecture course is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) at Part I level.

    • This accreditation provides a well-recognised first step toward becoming a fully registered architect in the UK.

  • Graduation Outcomes

    • Many graduates go on to do a Master of Architecture (MArch) to complete Part II and fully qualify as architects.

    • Others branch into related fields like landscape architecture, urban planning, interior design, property development, and digital design.

Further Academic Progression:

  • After the BA, students commonly pursue an MArch (Master of Architecture) to complete Part II and become professionally qualified.

  • For those interested in research, Lancaster also offers PhD / MPhil opportunities in architecture, design innovation, or sustainability — particularly through ImaginationLancaster.
