BArch (Hons) Architecture

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Staffordshire University

Program Overview

Staffordshire University’s BArch (Hons) Architecture blends creative exploration with social and environmental responsibility, encouraging students to rethink how architecture can shape communities—particularly in evolving, post-industrial contexts. It suits students who want to combine design innovation with real-world impact and community engagement.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Students begin with Exploratory Design – Studio 1, experimenting with form, space, and conceptual thinking. Design & Representation 1 builds essential drawing, CAD, modelling, and visual communication skills. Meanwhile, Design Cultures 1 introduces key architectural histories and theories, and Materials, Environment & Technology 1 provides a foundation in construction, environmental systems, and sustainable design principles.

Year 2

In the second year, Collaborative Practice – Studio 3 immerses students in community-facing or interdisciplinary projects, strengthening teamwork and applied design skills. Design & Representation 2 advances technical communication, while Design Cultures 2 deepens critical understanding of culture, landscape, and identity in architecture. Students further integrate technical learning through Design Resolution – Studio 4 and Materials, Environment & Technology 2, focusing on ecological construction and advanced building technologies.

Year 3

During the final year, Advanced Design – Studio 5 allows students to deliver a major, comprehensive architectural project that synthesises their conceptual, technical, and cultural learning. Critical Research fosters independent investigation into an architectural topic of personal interest. Materials, Environment & Technology 3 strengthens understanding of advanced structural and environmental systems, and Professional Practice prepares students for regulatory, ethical, and career-related aspects of the architectural profession.

Focus Areas

Community-led design, sustainable technologies, digital fabrication, architectural theory and culture, design communication, professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will be able to conceptualise and communicate architectural ideas with clarity, integrate structural and environmental understanding into design proposals, respond creatively to social and ecological challenges, and operate confidently within the regulatory and ethical frameworks of architectural practice.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The degree is officially prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) at Part 1 level and validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for Part 1, forming the essential first stage toward becoming a registered architect.

Reputation (Employability)

The course is recognised for its strong engagement with real clients and community projects, enabling students to build robust portfolios that reflect real-world challenges. Students benefit from access to advanced digital fabrication environments such as the Smart Zone, alongside a teaching approach that emphasises sustainability, innovation, and urban regeneration.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The BArch (Hons) Architecture at Staffordshire University is built around an immersive, studio-based approach where students learn by designing, making, testing, and collaborating. A large part of the course takes place in dedicated architecture studios, mirroring the environment of real architectural practice. From the beginning, students work on live projects connected to real clients and communities, using Stoke-on-Trent as a living laboratory for regeneration. You’ll develop a strong design identity by engaging with hands-on construction methods, environmental strategies, and digital tools, while site visits and industry engagement help you understand how buildings truly come together.

Shifting from creative studio work to structured practical learning, the program offers:

Practical & Applied Learning

  • Extensive design studio projects, progressing from conceptual exploration to complex architectural proposals

  • Live briefs that involve real clients, community partners, or local organisations

  • Hands-on learning in model-making, material experimentation, and fabrication techniques

  • Exposure to construction methods, structural principles, and environmental design

  • Opportunities for site visits, factory tours, and visits to architectural practices

  • Option for an international semester abroad, broadening global architectural understanding

  • Development of professional practice skills, including communication, presentation, and industry-standard workflows

  • A substantial independent design project in the final year to build a professional portfolio

Digital & Technical Tools

  • Experience with environmental simulation tools for testing performance and sustainability

  • Use of CAD and digital design software, applied throughout studio modules

  • Access to rapid prototyping tools, including 3D printing, laser cutting, scanning, and VR/AR technologies

Facilities

  • Smart Zone, a modern maker space with milling machines, 3D scanners, robotics, VR/AR, and rapid prototyping

  • Specialist workshops for wood, metal, resin, plastics, ceramics, and mixed media

  • Design studios with personal workspaces and access to digital labs

  • Renewable energy laboratory, supporting exploration of sustainable building technologies

  • On-campus art shop and technical support teams for materials and model-making.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The BArch (Hons) Architecture at Staffordshire University offers a creative and professionally focused pathway for students who want to shape the built environment. The program suits students who enjoy design, problem-solving, and developing innovative architectural concepts grounded in technical understanding. It blends artistic exploration with industry-relevant skills, preparing graduates for the next stage toward becoming a registered architect.

Students engage in hands-on studio work where they develop design proposals using industry-standard tools and methods. The course includes model-making, drawing, digital design, and collaborative workshops that mirror real architectural practice. Learners work on live briefs, community-focused projects, and contextual design challenges that build confidence and practical capability.

Exposure to professional environments is a key part of the experience. Students participate in site visits, exhibitions, and critique sessions with architects and industry mentors. Project-based learning ensures they understand how architecture responds to social, environmental, and technical demands.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The BArch (Hons) Architecture serves as the first step toward the professional pathway in architecture. After completion, graduates can progress to a Part 2 qualification such as a Master of Architecture, working towards full registration as an architect. Career opportunities include roles in architectural design, urban design, sustainability consultancy, visualisation, and model-making. The skills gained also support work in related creative and construction industries.
