Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year begins with Introduction to the Built Environment, where you explore the roles, regulations, and social impact of construction and architecture. In Creating Development, you’ll work on a planning‑oriented project that blends design, feasibility, and client needs. Core modules like Domestic Building Technology teach you the construction systems of small-scale buildings, while Digital Construction & Communication gives you practical skills in BIM and digital workflows. You also take Materials & Structures, where you learn about material science, structural behavior, and the foundations of building design. Technical Development introduces drawing, surveying, and regulatory compliance.

Year 2

In your second year, you’ll dive into Technical Design Factors, exploring structural systems and building technology in public and non-domestic contexts. Advanced Technical Development helps you apply performance criteria and regulatory standards in non-domestic design, using BIM tools (like Revit) to produce working drawings and detailed specs. You’ll also study Construction Law, learning the legal framework of building contracts, and Advanced Building Technology, examining construction techniques and integrated design systems. Structural Concepts & Services introduces structural systems and services integration, while Building Environmental Design teaches you about thermal comfort, lighting, acoustics, and energy modelling.

Year 3 (Placement Year / Sandwich)

In this year, many students take a Professional Practice – Architectural Technology placement in industry. This gives you structured, real-world work experience where you can apply your technical knowledge, refine professional skills, and build a portfolio — often leading to a Diploma in Professional Practice (DPP).

Year 4

Back on campus in your final year, you study Professional Practice & Management, where you learn about running a practice, project leadership, and the pathway to becoming a Chartered Architectural Technologist. You’ll also complete a Research Project, diving deep into a topic of your choice, and work through Technical Design Studio I & II, where you design medium- to large-scale, mixed‑use buildings using advanced digital tools and regulatory knowledge. Additionally, Conservation & Adaptation teaches you how to sensitively retrofit and repurpose existing buildings, while Green Building Design explores sustainability, energy demand, and low-carbon design strategies.
