3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The BA (Hons) Architecture at UCA Canterbury is a creatively rich, three‑year degree that prepares students for the foundational stage of professional architectural qualification (RIBA / ARB Part 1). It’s ideal for someone passionate about design, built environments, and how architecture can impact society, sustainability, and culture.
Curriculum Structure
Year One
In the first year, students dive into the fundamentals: through Launch Week and the unit Projects 01, they explore spatial enclosure and how design responds to human needs. Simultaneously, in Constructing for Equity 01, they learn about the technical principles of building construction, social justice, and the climate crisis, examining how civil regulations, materials, and societal challenges intersect.
Year Two
The second year builds on conceptual thinking and technical skills: modules like Design Concept and Spatial Design (Studio 2.1) push students to refine their spatial vision, while Detailed Design (Design Studio 2.2) helps them resolve form and structure at finer scales. In addition, Technical and Environmental Integration (Technical Studies 2) encourages students to integrate sustainable systems, materials, and regulatory knowledge into their design solutions.
Year Three
In the final year, students bring everything together in a self‑directed Design Thesis, synthesizing their design, technical proficiency, and research into a coherent architectural project. Alongside that, Accounts of Agency (Contextual Studies 3) offers a critical, reflective space to examine ethics, society, and the role of the architect. The module Strategic Technical Thesis (Technical Studies 3) challenges students to propose technically robust, future‑oriented building solutions, while Practicing Ethics 3 ensures their work remains grounded in ethical and environmental responsibility.
Focus Areas
Sustainable and socially conscious architecture, spatial design, technical construction, climate-responsive built environments, and ethical practice.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates will be able to apply analytical and problem‑solving skills to architectural questions; communicate design ideas through multiple media; understand the environmental and technical aspects of building; and demonstrate a critical awareness of professional and ethical responsibilities in architecture.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
This course is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) at Part 1 and prepares students for professional progression. However, note that the Architects Registration Board (ARB) is changing its prescription of Part 1 qualifications after December 2027.
Reputation / Employability
UCA’s Architecture program is well regarded: it has strong industry links, including with the Architects Registration Board and RIBA. Many graduates go on to work at top architectural practices, and the course benefits from UCA’s creative‑arts context and studio‑based learning.
On UCA’s Architecture degree, students don’t just learn theory — they gain hands-on experience from day one. The course takes place in dedicated studio spaces designed for both group critiques and individual work, helping students refine ideas in a real design environment. There’s a modelling workshop for physical projects, a virtual reality lab for immersive design exploration, and rapid-prototyping tools like laser cutters and 3D printers to make concepts tangible. Students use industry-standard software on both Macs and PCs, gaining practical digital skills. Faculty members are often practice-based professionals, giving feedback grounded in real-world architectural practice.
Students’ experiential learning includes:
Flexible design studios for workshops and group work
Modelling Workshop for building architectural models and hands-on experimentation
Virtual Reality (VR) lab to visualise and test spatial designs
Full fabrication lab with tools to work in wood, metal, plastic, and ceramics
Laser cutters and 3D printers to support rapid prototyping and model-making
Well-equipped computer studios with Macs and PCs loaded with design software
ArtMaker Studios, including wood workshops, fine art studios, and plaster rooms for interdisciplinary and creative work
