The Architecture (MEng / BEng) at Leeds is a four-year programme that combines creative architectural design with deep technical learning in structures, materials, building physics, and environmental impact. It’s designed for students who want a broad, integrated understanding of architecture: not only how buildings look, but how they perform, how they’re built, and their broader societal and environmental effects.
Curriculum structure
Here’s roughly what you will study in each year, and how the modules build up.
Year 1
You start with a common first year shared across the School of Civil Engineering, taking six compulsory modules. Modules like Architecture and Sustainability, Surveying, Construction Technology and Management, Structural Analysis and Design, plus introductory mathematics, modelling, and environmental/tech basics give you the fundamentals. There’s also a residential surveying field course to get hands-on exposure.
Year 2
In Year 2 you deepen your technical knowledge and begin more substantial design work. You’ll take modules in Structural Design and Analysis, Materials and Geotechnics, building physics, and architectural history & theory. At the same time, design studios become more central: you’ll work on design projects combining what you’ve learned about structure, sustainability, environment, and aesthetics.
Year 3
This is when your design work and theory really integrate. You’ll engage in advanced architecture design studio modules, more in-depth study of building physics, structural systems, and history/theory. There is also a study visit to a European city and fieldwork components to expand your perspective and experience. At the end of Year 3, you may elect to exit with a BEng (architecture technical qualification) or continue to the full MEng.
Year 4 (for MEng)
For those progressing to MEng, Year 4 builds toward mastery. The modules require you to take on significant, self-driven design studio projects where you integrate structure, building services, environmental systems, and design aesthetics at a high level. Also included are advanced modules in theory, law/practice, management, and technical modelling – the goal is to leave you ready for professional registration and leadership in architecture/engineering.
When you study Architecture (MEng/BEng) at Leeds, you're not just in lectures—you’ll be designing, testing, surveying, building models, learning technical performance, and exploring real-sites. From the start, design studios are central: you’ll spend much of your time sketching, CAD/modelling, working in teams, critiquing work, and using industry standard digital tools. As you progress, there are field trips, lab-experiments, residential study periods, and the chance to shape your final year project to reflect your own interests and the real world.
