BA Hons Architecture

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

De Montfort University

Program Overview

The BA (Hons) Architecture at De Montfort University offers a creative, design-focused education rooted in real-world architectural practice. It’s perfect for students who want to become thoughtful, socially aware designers with strong skills in sustainability, culture, and spatial creativity.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
The first year develops your core creative and technical foundations through modules such as Studio 1: Exploring Architecture, Studio 2: Experiencing Architecture, and Studio 3: Creating Architecture. You’ll learn how to observe, analyse, and reimagine space through drawing, model-making, design tasks, and an introduction to architectural history and theory.

Year 2
In your second year, you advance into deeper design thinking through modules like Exploring Ethical and Climate Literacy, Contextualising Architectural Humanities, Practicing Ethical Design, and Applying Climate Literate Design. You’ll design projects that respond to social and environmental challenges, work with sustainable materials and low-energy concepts, and build a robust understanding of global architecture, culture, and identity.

Year 3
Year three pushes you toward professional-level thinking with Design Enquiry and Strategy, where you tackle complex design briefs grounded in ethics, legislation, and safety. In Critical and Cultural Thinking, you complete a dissertation connected to architectural theory or cultural issues. Through Design Proposition and Synthesis and Design Resolution and Professionalism, you deliver a polished final project that integrates environmental strategy, technical detail, and professional practice.

Focus Areas
Ethical and climate-responsive design; architectural humanities; spatial experience and representation; sustainability; professional and legislative frameworks.

Learning Outcomes
Graduates will be able to create architectural designs that respond to cultural, environmental and social contexts; communicate through advanced drawings and models; apply sustainable design thinking; and understand the professional, legal and ethical responsibilities of architectural practice.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
This program is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), forming the recognised Part 1 qualification needed for a future career as an architect.

Reputation (Employability & Facilities)
DMU’s Leicester School of Architecture has over 125 years of architectural education history, offering studio-led learning, expert tutors, and strong industry links. Students benefit from modern design studios, digital labs, fabrication workshops, and a teaching model that encourages creativity, collaboration, and portfolio development — ideal for progressing to RIBA Part II or into professional practice.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students on the BA (Hons) Architecture course at De Montfort University learn through a rich blend of studio practice, hands-on making, digital experimentation, and real-world engagement. From the beginning, they work within design studios that mirror professional environments, receiving ongoing feedback from tutors and guest architects. The course encourages students to explore how architecture responds to cultural, social, and environmental needs, pushing them to design with purpose and creativity.

Throughout their studies, learners respond to real design briefs, investigate human-centred issues, and explore the impact of climate and ethics on architecture. International opportunities through DMU Global give students chances to experience architectural contexts abroad, with previous study trips including Venice and Barcelona. This global exposure, combined with workshops, digital labs, presentations, and continuous critiques, equips students with a strong portfolio and the confidence to enter architectural practice.

Key Experiential Components & Facilities

  • Design Studios & Studio Culture

    • Students work in dedicated architecture studios throughout the degree, developing their projects in a collaborative, creative environment.

    • They participate in regular tutorials, group critiques, and reviews with both tutors and visiting architects.

    • Studio teaching encourages students to experiment, refine concepts, and build a unique architectural voice.

  • Manual & Digital Making

    • First-year modules introduce techniques such as architectural drawing, physical model-making, collage, assemblage, and exploratory material testing.

    • Students also work with time-based media including film, animation, storyboards, and time-lapse, helping them convey movement, atmosphere, and spatial experience.

    • Creative risk-taking is encouraged through hands-on workshops and experimental design tasks.

  • Climate, Ethics & Technical Strategy

    • Students develop climate literacy and ethical awareness, learning how to design buildings that are environmentally responsible and culturally sensitive.

    • They explore materiality, structure, environmental performance, inclusivity, and safety legislation as part of their technical strategy work.

    • In the final year, students undertake a major design project that synthesises technical, aesthetic, cultural, and regulatory considerations, alongside a written dissertation or critical research study.

  • International & Local Context Exposure

    • Students have opportunities to travel internationally through DMU Global, with destinations such as Venice and Barcelona offered in previous years.

    • Locally, students engage with Leicester-based projects, community contexts, and live design briefs embedded within the curriculum.

  • Build & Fabrication Facilities

    • The program is supported by the specialist facilities in the Vijay Patel Building, including open-plan studios, CAD labs, fabrication workshops, and digital making spaces.

    • Learners use metal and wood workshops, digital fabrication, rapid prototyping tools, and even VR to visualise and test spatial ideas.

    • The building’s transparent, collaborative layout encourages interaction between disciplines and year groups.

  • Assessment & Feedback

    • Students are assessed through project work, portfolio submissions, written assignments, presentations, and reflective practice.

    • Feedback is continuous throughout tutorials, critiques, and interim reviews, helping learners to grow steadily throughout the program.

  • Professional Accreditation & Career Preparation

    • The course is fully validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), forming the first stage of professional architectural training.

    • Students develop professional identity, ethical awareness, and employability skills throughout the course.

    • Graduates progress into architectural practice, urban design, planning, heritage, project management, or postgraduate architectural study.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the BA (Hons) Architecture at De Montfort University (DMU) leave with a strong creative and technical foundation that prepares them for careers across the built environment. Many progress into roles such as architectural assistant, urban designer, conservation specialist, or project manager, with typical earnings around £23,000–£24,000 within 15 months of graduation.

Here is how DMU supports students’ long-term success:

  • University services for employment: DMU’s Careers and Employability team offers portfolio support, interview preparation, networking sessions, and help in securing internships and placements.

  • Employment & salary stats: Around 80% of graduates are in work or further study 15 months after completing the course, with a high proportion moving into skilled professional roles. Typical graduate salaries fall around £23,000.

  • University–industry partnerships: Students benefit from engagement with professional architects, visiting critics, and leading design studios. Previous graduates have gone on to work with well-known practices such as Heatherwick Studio, Make Architects, and Shigeru Ban Architects.

  • Long-term accreditation value: The BA (Hons) Architecture is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and has been revalidated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), ensuring the qualification meets essential professional standards for those pursuing the path to architect status.

  • Graduation outcomes: Alumni often follow the traditional route toward becoming registered architects, or branch out into related fields such as urban design, heritage and conservation, project management, digital visualisation, and even creative sectors like animation or game design.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing this degree, students commonly progress to the Master of Architecture (MArch) as the next step toward full professional accreditation. Others choose postgraduate study in areas such as sustainable architecture, heritage conservation, architectural technology, urban planning, digital design, or continue through a professionally accredited architect degree apprenticeship combining advanced study with workplace experience.
