Program Overview

The BA (Hons) Film and Screen Production at Regent's University London prepares aspiring filmmakers to create compelling stories across film, television, documentary, and digital media. Combining hands-on production experience with creative and technical training, the programme enables students to explore directing, producing, cinematography, editing, and production management while building a professional portfolio for careers in the global screen industries.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

The first year introduces students to the foundations of filmmaking through modules including Visual Storytelling, Studio Production, and Researching and Writing for Filmmakers. Students learn the principles of directing, cinematography, screenwriting, editing, and production management while producing practical film projects and collaborating with students across different creative disciplines.

Year 2

In the second year, students develop specialist production skills through modules such as Biographical Short Film, Genre Short Film, and Production Design. They refine their creative practice by producing documentary and narrative films, exploring advanced production techniques, and gaining professional experience through an Industry Challenge, optional Placement, or Study Abroad opportunity.

Year 3

The final year focuses on professional practice through The Short Film: The Film and the Market, Major Project I, and Major Project II. Students create industry-standard short films, develop marketing strategies for their productions, and complete a self-directed major project that demonstrates their technical expertise, creative vision, and readiness for employment in the film and television industries.

Students produce a portfolio of short films, work in real production crews, and use industry-standard cameras, lighting, sound, and post-production facilities while learning directly from award-winning filmmakers. Based in central London, the programme also provides access to major film festivals, production companies, studios, and networking opportunities across the UK's screen industries.

  • Produce multiple short drama films, documentaries, and commercial projects throughout the programme, creating an industry-ready showreel and professional portfolio.
  • Work in professional film crews, rotating through roles including director, producer, cinematographer, editor, production manager, boom operator, camera assistant, and production assistant to gain experience across every stage of production.
  • Collaborate with Screenwriting & Producing and Acting for Stage and Screen students on interdisciplinary productions that mirror professional filmmaking workflows.
  • Work with Abbey Road Studios composers, who create original soundtracks for student films, providing experience of professional cross-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Benefit from partnerships with Spotlight Casting, including industry sessions and exclusive student discounts for professional casting services.
  • Learn from Oscar-nominated, BAFTA-winning, and Royal Television Society-recognised filmmakers, directors, producers, and cinematographers through masterclasses, workshops, guest lectures, and one-to-one tutorials.
  • Use industry-standard production equipment, including RED, Sony Venice, Canon, and Blackmagic 6K cinema cameras, Zeiss Compact Prime lenses, Tilta Wireless Follow Focus, ARRI SkyPanels, Dedolights, Celeb lighting, professional sound mixers, wireless video transmission systems, Glidecam, and Steadicam stabilisers.
  • Train in specialist editing suites, colour grading studio, ADR room, podcasting studio, 5.1 surround sound mixing suite, and a multicamera television studio and gallery.
  • Work with professional software including Adobe Creative Cloud, DaVinci Resolve Studio, Final Draft, and Epidemic Sound, all available for student productions.
  • Participate in field trips to the Aesthetica Film Festival for networking and industry research, as well as a residential trip to Brighton for team building, script development, and preparation for final-year productions.
  • Receive a free pass to the London Screenwriters' Festival, hosted by Regent's, providing networking opportunities with writers, producers, directors, commissioners, and industry professionals.
  • Complete an optional industry placement, with previous students gaining experience at organisations including BBC, ITV, BFI, independent production companies, and West End theatres.
  • Study abroad for a term at one of 60+ partner universities in over 20 countries, including opportunities with Vancouver Film School.
  • Complete a self-directed Major Project, producing an original film from concept to festival submission while developing professional production, leadership, marketing, and project management skills.
