University of Bristol

Program Overview

The BA (hons) Interior Design (Optional Sandwich Year) at UWE Bristol is designed to help you grow into a confident, creative interior designer, even if you’re still building your academic or design background. You’ll explore how interiors shape experiences and behaviour, while developing the creative, technical and professional skills needed to design inspiring spaces for real people.

Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year

The foundation year helps you ease into creative degree study while building confidence and core design skills. You’ll develop visual communication, design thinking and practical studio skills through hands-on projects that encourage experimentation and creativity. This year prepares you for degree-level work by strengthening your ability to think critically, communicate ideas and work independently.

Year 1

In your first degree year, you’ll begin applying design principles to interior spaces. You’ll explore how space, light, colour and materials influence atmosphere and experience, while learning to communicate ideas through drawing, modelling and digital tools. Studio projects help you develop a strong understanding of context and begin shaping your personal design approach.

Year 2

Your second year pushes your creativity and technical understanding further through more complex briefs. You’ll respond to contemporary design challenges, explore emerging trends, and refine how you develop and present ideas. This year encourages deeper research, experimentation and critical thinking, helping you become more confident and independent in your design process.

Year 3

In your final year, you’ll bring everything together through advanced, self-directed work. You’ll complete a major research-led design project that reflects your interests and career ambitions, while also refining a professional portfolio. This year focuses on preparing you for employment or further study by strengthening your design identity and professional confidence.
