BSc (Hons) Business Management with Human Resource Management

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Plymouth

Program Overview

This is a three-year (full-time) degree combining core business skills (leadership, marketing, operations, financial decision-making) with specialised HR training like employee behaviour, leadership competencies, and global HR practices. It’s particularly suited to students who want to graduate ready to enter HR or business roles with confidence, plus gain practical, real‐world experience (through placements & live business projects).

Curriculum Structure

Year One
You’ll begin by building strong foundations in how businesses operate, how people behave in organisations, and what leadership entails. Modules include Developing Management and Leadership Competencies, Business Culture and Behaviour, Marketing, Enterprise and the Digital Economy, and The Business Environment: A Global Perspective. Through these you’ll learn basics of organisational behaviour and leadership, global business context, digital marketing, enterprise, and how business culture operates in real firms.

Year Two
In your second year the course shifts toward more specialist and strategic content. You’ll study Financial Data Analysis and Decision Making for Business to strengthen quantitative and analytical skills. There are also HR-oriented modules like Contemporary HRM, HRM in a Global Context, plus optional ones such as Enterprise, Innovation and Creativity, Business Consultancy, or Experiential Practice. This year is where you apply theory more: case studies, live projects, critical thinking about HR’s role in organisational strategy.

Placement Year (Optional)
You have the opportunity to take a placement year which gives you direct work experience in a HR or business setting. This helps bridge the gap between academic learning and employment, build professional networks, and make your CV much stronger.

Final Year
In your final year you focus on higher-level, strategic HR and business management skills. You’ll undertake major modules like Human Resource Management in a Global Context, Contemporary HRM, and also an Honours Project (research or practice-based) which lets you explore in depth something you are passionate about. Alongside, you’ll pick optional modules and perhaps engage with live briefs, consultancy work or industry reflection to prepare for your career.

Reputation (Employability / Rankings)

  • Around 95% of graduates are in work or further study 15 months after graduating.
  • Relative earnings for business & management graduates are positive: first-year after graduation earnings are around £21,500, rising in subsequent years.
  • Students particularly value the live business projects, industry connections, and the chance to apply learning practically (through optional placement year). These strengthen employability.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the University of Plymouth, this degree is designed to help you learn by doing. From your very first year, you’ll get involved in real projects, gain hands-on management experience, and develop the practical HR and business skills employers look for. The course combines theory with genuine industry engagement, so you leave not just with knowledge — but with confidence and competence in managing people and driving business performance.

Here’s how you’ll gain that experience:

  • Work Placement Year
You’ll have the option to take a full placement year between your second and final year. It’s a chance to gain real industry experience, build professional networks, and put your management and HR knowledge into practice within a real organisation.

  • Live Consultancy Projects
Throughout the degree, you’ll work on live briefs with local businesses and social enterprises. These projects allow you to apply your learning to real challenges — developing solutions, presenting findings, and making recommendations directly to clients.

  • Practical and Reflective Modules
Modules such as Developing Management and Leadership Competencies focus on teamwork, leadership exercises, and self-evaluation. In later years, the Experiential Practice module helps you reflect on your real-world learning and link it to your career goals.

  • Honours Project / Dissertation
In your final year, you’ll complete an independent research or consultancy project. Many students choose to partner with a business, exploring real HR or management issues to propose practical solutions.

  • Human Resource Management Focus
You’ll study specialised modules in People Management, Contemporary HRM, and HR in a Global Context, giving you an in-depth understanding of recruitment, motivation, talent management, and strategic HR decision-making.

  • Digital and Analytical Skills Development
Modules in Decision Making for Business and Financial Data Analysis teach you to interpret business data and use digital tools to make evidence-based decisions — skills that are essential for HR professionals in today’s data-driven environment.

  • Modern Facilities
You’ll study in the Fitzroy Building, home to Plymouth Business School. It includes collaborative learning spaces, advanced IT labs, and the Bloomberg Interactive Suite, where you can work with real financial and business data. The Cube enterprise hub also supports students who want to explore entrepreneurship and innovation.

  • Career and Placement Support
A dedicated careers and employability team offers one-to-one coaching, CV reviews, mock interviews, and networking events with employers — ensuring you’re fully prepared to secure placements and graduate roles.
