BA (Hons) Human Resource Management

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Wolverhampton

Program Overview

This course gives you the practical skills and business knowledge you need for a career in HR, personnel management, or wider business operations. It’s designed for students who want to deeply understand how people management works in the real world, with modules and activities grounded in case studies, legislation, leadership, and professional standards.

Curriculum structure

Here’s how the course unfolds over the years (full-time, 3 years). Part-time and sandwich versions have similar themes, just stretched or with a placement.

Year 1

In your first year you’ll build foundational skills. You’ll take Developing People Practitioner Skills (4HR020), which introduces how HR professionals operate, how you reflect on your own development, and the basics of research and self-awareness. You’ll also do The Digital Business (4BU017) to understand digital transformation, business information systems and how organisations use technology, plus modules like Inclusive Business (4HR019) where you learn about equity, diversity, inclusivity, and the legislation around them. These give you tools both for HR theory and the business context around HR.

Year 2

In Year 2 you move more into how HR works in organisations. You’ll study modules like Analysing People Development in Organisations (5HR010) which looks at how people are trained, developed and how that aligns with strategy. Also Theory and Practice of People Management (5HR011) covers the employment cycle – from recruitment to exit – with legal, ethical, and performance dimensions. Another module, International HR Professional (5HR009), introduces global HR issues (cross-cultural, international employment law, etc.), giving you wider perspective.

Year 3

Your final year focuses on strategy, leadership, and transition into professional HR roles. Modules include Strategic People Management (6HR010), looking at how macro-environmental factors impact HR strategy, future of work, changing ways of working, and how organisations transform. Then you’ll do People Profession - Transforming Organisations (6HR008) which deals with organisational design, change management, structure, sustainability etc. You also undertake a capstone Professional Project (6BU020) to apply what you’ve learned in a self-directed study, plus Transition into the HR Profession (6HR009) to prepare you for your career path, analyse career strategies, and enhance your employability.

This is a strong plus for employability in HR roles, as many employers look for CIPD alignment.

Reputation (employability rankings)

  • The University of Wolverhampton is ranked 27th in the UK for Business & Management in the Guardian University Guide 2026.
  • The University has also moved up in overall Gudardian university rankings, including improvements in student satisfaction.
  • Business School tutors are practitioners or closely connected with industry, which means what you learn is current and relevant.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Right from the start, this programme isn’t just about studying theory — you’ll do stuff. You’ll work with real HR tools, engage with businesses, reflect on your own practice, and learn by doing. The modules are built so you practise skills that actual HR professionals use, and many assessments are based on case studies, reflections, and projects relevant to today’s workplace. The course is also accredited by CIPD, which means what you learn aligns with professional standards in HR.

Here are the concrete ways that happens:

  • In the Developing People Practitioner Skills module you’ll use CIPD tools, work on reflective practice, and apply skills that HR roles need in business.
  • The Digital Business module introduces information systems, big data, and business intelligence — you’ll use software and digital tools that businesses actually use to manage data, operations, etc.
  • There are case studies, guest speakers from industry, site visits and field observations so you see HR and business in action.
  • A Professional Project capstone module lets you pull together what you’ve learned by picking something of interest, doing in-depth study or intervention, and reflecting on it.
  • Opportunities for internships / sandwich placements exist, giving you full-time work experience to put theory into practice.

Facilities & Tools You’ll Use

To support all that practical work, the University gives you excellent infrastructure, spaces, and software — so you’re not just imagining, but doing with professional-level resources:

  • You’ll be based in the Lord Swraj Paul Building at the University’s City Campus (Molineux). It’s a six-storey, purpose-built Business School building.
  • Within that building you have:
    • IT suite / computer labs with specialist business simulation tools and management software.
    • Consulting rooms and meeting rooms — spaces to practise meetings, presentations, group work, interviews etc.
    • Teaching and learning spaces that are innovative (more than just lecture halls: they have breakout areas, flexible seating, AV and hybrid teaching rooms) for collaborative and digital work.
    • Central social space and cafés so you have informal places to work in groups, network, discuss business ideas etc.
  • On the digital/software side:
    • The university supports you with Microsoft 365 tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, OneDrive etc.) as well as online learning through Canvas, MyWLV, and hybrid meeting rooms.
    • The library provides access to computers, scanners, video equipment, and resources for research. Some labs are open into evenings and weekends.
