4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you’re fascinated by robots, smart systems, and the technology that’s shaping the future, this degree is perfect for you. Kingston University’s Robotic Engineering and Artificial Intelligence BEng (Hons) with Foundation Year gives you the skills to design, build, and program intelligent machines while preparing you for a career at the cutting edge of engineering and AI.
Curriculum structure:
Foundation Year: This year is all about building a solid base, especially if you haven’t studied engineering before. You’ll strengthen your maths, programming, and basic engineering skills so you’re ready to hit the ground running in Year 1.
Year 1: You’ll start getting hands-on with Introduction to Programming, Microcontrollers and Interface Electronics, and Engineering Design and Manufacture. You’ll learn how to write code, connect sensors and devices, and bring ideas to life in the workshop with your first engineering projects.
Year 2: Here, things get more exciting. With modules like Robot Design and Build Project, Machine Learning and Computer Vision, Control Systems, and Robot Kinematics and Dynamics, you’ll design and build more advanced robots, apply AI to real-world problems, and get a solid understanding of how robots move and respond to their environment.
Year 3: The final year is your chance to shine. You’ll focus on an Individual Project alongside modules such as Applied Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Modelling and Simulation in Soft Robotics, and Advanced Microcontrollers. This is where you combine everything you’ve learned to create intelligent, functional robotic systems, explore advanced AI applications, and showcase your skills to future employers.
Focus areas: robotics, AI, embedded systems, machine learning, computer vision, control systems, mechatronics, autonomous systems
Learning outcomes: graduates will be confident designing and programming robots, applying AI and computer vision to engineering challenges, managing engineering projects, and working across mechanical, electronic, and software systems.
Professional alignment (accreditation): The course equips you with key engineering principles and prepares you for industry standards, giving you a strong foundation for professional engineering roles.
Reputation (employability rankings): Kingston University is known for its practical approach and strong links with industry, helping graduates step straight into careers in robotics, AI, and related fields.
At Kingston, learning isn’t just about lectures — it’s about getting your hands on real robots, coding systems, and engineering tools from day one. You’ll spend time in state-of-the-art labs and workshops, bringing your ideas to life, testing designs, and learning to solve real engineering challenges just like professionals do. From programming robots to building intelligent systems, you’ll gain practical skills that make you confident and job-ready.
Some of the ways you’ll gain hands-on experience include:
Robotics and electronics labs: Work with rapid-prototyping machines, mechanical workshops, and industry-standard equipment to build and test robots.
Advanced robot platforms and software: Gain experience with humanoid robots like NAO and Pepper, Unitree robot models, and Fanuc educational arms, using Python, MATLAB, TensorFlow, and OpenCV for AI and computer vision projects.
Team-based projects: Collaborate on real-world design challenges, developing, manufacturing, and testing robotic systems in groups — just like in industry.
Control systems and simulations: Model, analyse, and implement robotic systems in realistic environments to understand kinematics, dynamics, and automation.
Industry-standard facilities: Work in cutting-edge labs with “factory-grade” robotics, ensuring your skills match what employers expect.
Supportive resources: Benefit from dedicated computer labs, libraries, and project workspaces that help you bring your ideas from concept to reality.
Graduating from this course opens doors to exciting careers where you can design and build intelligent machines, automate systems, and bring AI to life in real-world applications. Many graduates go on to become Robotic Systems Engineers, AI or Computer Vision Engineers, Autonomous Vehicle Developers, or Embedded Systems Designers. With hands-on experience and practical skills built throughout the course, you’ll be ready to make an immediate impact in high-tech industries:
Dedicated employability support: Kingston’s careers team will help you polish your CV, ace interviews, and connect with opportunities tailored to engineering and AI roles.
Industry-ready experience: The combination of labs, projects, and team challenges ensures you graduate with the skills employers are looking for.
Future Skills programme: You’ll also strengthen your problem-solving, digital literacy, and teamwork abilities — all highly valued in the workplace.
Professional value: The course lays a foundation for long-term career growth, including routes to becoming a chartered engineer or specialist technical roles.
Networking opportunities: Studying in London gives you access to employer events, tech meetups, and industry connections that can help launch your career.
Further Academic Progression:
If you want to continue your studies, you could go on to a Master’s degree in areas like robotics, AI, or mechatronics, or upgrade to an MEng (Hons) to deepen your specialisation. Research-focused paths such as an MRes or PhD are also possible, building on the technical and project experience you gain during the degree.
