Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) MSci

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Royal Holloway University of London

Program Overview

The MSci Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) at Royal Holloway is a four-year program that blends core computer science knowledge with cutting-edge AI skills. It’s perfect for students who are curious, love problem-solving, and want to build a career creating intelligent systems that can learn, reason, and adapt.

Throughout the course, you’ll explore programming, algorithms, and computer systems while diving deep into AI topics like machine learning, neural networks, and natural language processing. You’ll get plenty of hands-on experience, preparing you to design and implement smart, real-world solutions.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Foundations of Computer Science

In your first year, you’ll get a solid grounding in the essentials of computing. You’ll learn programming, computer architecture, and the mathematical foundations that underpin all computer science. Core modules include Programming Fundamentals, Mathematics for Computing, Computer Systems and Architecture, and an Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, giving you the building blocks for more advanced AI topics later on.

Year 2: Intermediate AI and Software Development

Year two introduces more advanced AI concepts and practical software development skills. You’ll work on Data Structures and Algorithms, Machine Learning, Software Engineering Principles, and Artificial Intelligence Techniques. This year is all about applying what you’ve learned to real coding projects and starting to tackle AI challenges head-on.

Year 3: Advanced AI Topics and Research Methods

In year three, you’ll explore specialist AI areas and develop research skills. Modules like Neural Networks and Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, AI Research Methods, and Ethics in AI will stretch your thinking and prepare you for independent research. By now, you’ll be ready to handle complex AI problems and consider their wider impact on society.

Year 4: Master's-Level AI and Capstone Project

Your final year is about putting everything together in a master’s-level experience. You’ll take Advanced Machine Learning, AI in Practice, and complete a Capstone AI Project. This is your chance to design, develop, and showcase your own AI solution, proving you’re ready for either industry roles or further research.
