BEng Computing

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Imperial College London

Program Overview

The BEng Computing at Imperial College London is a rigorous three-year program that blends theoretical foundations with hands-on engineering of computer systems. Ideal for students passionate about solving real-world problems through technology, this program equips you with expertise in hardware, software, and mathematical principles, preparing you to design next-generation computing applications

Imperial’s BEng Computing combines world-class research, industry connections, and a flexible curriculum. With a focus on real-world applicability and a vibrant London campus near tech hubs, this program is a launchpad for leadership in tech.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:
Build a strong foundation with core modules like Introduction to Computer Systems and DatabasesDiscrete Mathematics, Logic and Reasoning, and Computing Practical 1, which combines programming labs with professional ethics projects. You’ll tackle algorithmic problem-solving and gain proficiency in multiple programming paradigms through structured coursework and group projects.

Year 2:
Deepen your knowledge with 9 core and 1 optional advanced modules such as Algorithm DesignOperating Systems, Probability and Statistics, Computational Techniques, and Networks and Communications. A Computing Group Project fosters teamwork, while optional modules like Symbolic Reasoning allow specialization. The curriculum emphasizes system design, performance analysis, and practical labs.

Year 3:
Focus on autonomy and innovation: Choose 6 from electives like Machine LearningComputer Vision, Custom Computing, Operations Research, Graphics, etc. and undertake a year-long Individual Project which offers a chance to explore cutting-edge research or industry-aligned challenges under faculty supervision. The I-Explore module broadens horizons with interdisciplinary subjects.

Assessment Methods

  • Year 184% exams, 10% coursework (e.g., programming tests), 6% practicals.

  • Year 2: 57% exams, 33% practicals (e.g., group projects), 10% coursework.

  • Year 350% practicals (individual project), 42% exams, 8% coursework.

Key Features

  • Focus Areas: Software engineering, systems design, AI, and theoretical computing.

  • Professional Alignment: Accredited by BCS and IET, meeting standards for Chartered IT Professional and Incorporated Engineer status.

  • Reputation: Imperial ranks #2 globally (QS 2025) and boasts a 19:1 applicant-to-place ratio, reflecting its prestige.

  • Employability: Graduates earn a median salary of £65,000 within 15 months, with 97% in high-skilled roles like IT professionals.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Imperial College London, you won’t just study computing, you’ll engineer solutions from day one. Our BEng program immerses you in real-world problem-solving through structured labs, industry collaborations, and cutting-edge facilities. You’ll work with the same tools professionals use, from AI development suites to hardware prototyping systems, while tackling projects that grow in complexity each year. By graduation, you’ll have built a portfolio of functional systems and not just theoretical concepts.

Here’s how we make it happen:

  • Advanced Labs & Tools: Access 200+ dedicated workstations across modern teaching labs (Huxley Building), supporting Windows, Linux, and macOS environments. Specialized hardware for robotics, custom computing, and network security is available for projects.
  • Industry-Standard Software: Use TensorFlow/PyTorch for machine learning modules, CAD tools for architecture design, and enterprise-grade IDEs (e.g., IntelliJ, VS Code). Free Microsoft software via the Microsoft Imagine program.
  • Group Projects: Collaborate on team-based challenges in Year 2 (Computing Group Project) and Year 3 (Software Engineering Group Projects), often with external companies like ARM or Google.
  • Summer Internships (Optional): Although not mandatory for BEng, our Industrial Liaison Team connects you to 4–12-week roles at 250+ partners (e.g., Meta, NVIDIA). Speed Interview events streamline hiring.
  • Research Facilities: Conduct experiments in specialized labs: Robotics Studio for automation, Secure Systems Lab for cryptography, and AI Sandbox for ML model training.
  • Learning Resources: Utilize the Department of Computing’s dedicated library, 24/7 study zones, and the Computing Support Group for technical mentorship.

Transition Seamlessly from Classrooms to Careers
Our grads average £60,000 starting salaries, one of the highest in the UK, thanks to this rigorous applied approach. You’ll design compilers, optimize networks, or even publish AI research, all before graduation.
