Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence BSc (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Loughborough University

Program Overview

This degree blends the best of computer science with the fast-moving world of artificial intelligence. You’ll learn how to design intelligent systems that can reason, learn, and solve problems — preparing you to shape the future of technology, from robotics to data-driven innovation.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
Your first year builds a solid foundation in the essentials of computing and AI. You’ll explore Programming and Databases, Computer Systems and Low-Level Programming, Logic for Computer Science, Introduction to Algorithms, and Foundations of Artificial Intelligence. Through hands-on coding and problem-solving, you’ll understand how computers “think” — setting you up to create intelligent systems that learn and adapt.

Year 2
The second year dives deeper into real-world applications. Modules such as Software Engineering: Practices and Principles, Web Systems, Data Mining and Machine Learning, and Robotics help you bring theory to life. You’ll gain practical experience in developing software, building smart systems, and applying AI models to real data — skills that employers in every tech sector are looking for.

Final Year (or Placement Year + Final Year)
In your final year, you’ll have the freedom to specialise and innovate. Modules like Advanced Artificial Intelligence Systems, Computer Vision, and Agent-Based Systems let you explore cutting-edge areas of AI. You’ll also complete an independent AI Project, where you’ll design and build a system of your own — a chance to showcase everything you’ve learned. Many students also choose to spend a year in industry before their final year, gaining invaluable experience and professional connections.

Focus areas: Artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, computer vision, intelligent agents, software engineering, data systems

Learning outcomes: You’ll graduate ready to design and build intelligent software, apply advanced AI and data-driven techniques, analyse complex systems, and work confidently in professional, collaborative environments.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), fully meeting the academic requirements for Chartered IT Professional registration.

Reputation (employability rankings): Loughborough ranks 8th for Student Experience in Computer Science (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026), with an excellent record for graduate employability and placement opportunities.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Loughborough, learning computer science and artificial intelligence isn’t just about lectures — it’s about doing. From your first year, you’ll be designing, coding, and experimenting in high-tech labs using the same tools and software that professionals rely on. You’ll get to work in teams, tackle real-world projects, and even test your skills in industry during a year-long placement. Every part of your experience is designed to help you graduate with confidence, creativity, and job-ready skills.

Here’s what that looks like in action:

  • Cutting-edge computer labs: You’ll have 24-hour access to six state-of-the-art computing suites, equipped with high-performance PCs, GPU workstations, and networking setups to support everything from programming to AI experiments.

  • Specialist robotics lab: Get hands-on with humanoid and mobile robots like Pepper, NAO, e-puck, and quadcopter drones — perfect for testing algorithms in robotics, machine vision, and intelligent systems.

  • Team-based projects: You’ll collaborate with classmates in modules like Team Project, building software and AI applications together, simulating what it’s like to work in a real tech team.

  • Industry-standard environments: Explore real-world computing through modules that use Linux and Windows virtual environments, so you gain experience working with professional tools and systems.

  • Professional placement year: Spend a year in industry with leading employers like IBM, Microsoft, or Sony. It’s a chance to apply your knowledge, gain experience, and build a network before graduation.

  • World-class resources: You’ll benefit from access to the university’s award-winning library, dedicated study zones, and the LEARN digital platform — giving you all the support you need to succeed.
