Together, these modules lay a firm groundwork in key disciplines while giving you early exposure to programming and problem-solving.

Year 2

Moving into year two, you'll build deeper understanding through modules such as Algorithm Design and Data Structures, Applied Statistics, Distributions and Estimation, Numerical Analysis, Linear Algebra, Modelling Persistent Data, and Software Engineering. This year stretches your ability to analyze data, work with databases, and engage with software lifecycles—setting you up for more complex challenges.

Year 3 (Integrated Year in Industry)

Year three is your opportunity to step into the professional world through the Sandwich Year placement. You’ll apply your academic learning in a real-industry setting, gaining confidence, networking opportunities, and insight into what truly drives data-driven organizations.

Year 4

In the final year, your studies culminate with advanced and practical modules like Machine Learning, Minor Project, Statistical Inference and Linear Models, Linear Statistical Models, and the significant Major Project. You’ll draw together statistical mastery and computing skills to investigate realistic data challenges—plus, you can explore even more specialized topics through options like Graphs and Networks or Stochastic Models in Finance

Focus Areas

A fusion of mathematical statistics, computational methods, programming, data modelling, machine learning, and real-world data analysis.

Learning Outcomes

You’ll learn to design and perform large-scale data analyses, apply statistical models and machine learning algorithms, engineer software solutions, and communicate actionable insights, all underpinned by strong theoretical reasoning and practical experience.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

While the course doesn’t list specific accreditations on the course page, it is jointly delivered by the Departments of Mathematics (taught since 1872) and Computer Science, ensuring teaching from highly qualified, research-active faculty with strong standards of professional and pedagogical expertise.

Reputation (Employability & Satisfaction)

  • Employability: There’s a recognized global shortage of skilled data scientists, with estimates suggesting around 200,000 professionals will be needed in the near future. Aberystwyth graduates go on to work for names like IBM, HP, CERN, Walt Disney, GCHQ, and more.

  • Student Experience: The 2023–24 National Student Survey reports high satisfaction across both Mathematics and Computer Science course components—reaching up to 98%+ approval on the quality of learning resources, teaching, feedback, course management, and academic support.
