Reputation and Student Experience
UEL’s Data Science and AI programme was ranked first in London in nine categories in the 2024 National Student Survey, including Teaching Quality and Learning Opportunities. According to student feedback highlighted by WhatUni, the course stands out for combining two high-demand fields with excellent support from staff and strong graduate outcomes.
Experiential Learning in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at UEL
One of the best things about this degree is how practical it is from the very start. You won’t just sit through theory — you’ll actually be building systems, testing ideas, and solving real problems along the way. By the time you graduate, you’ll have hands-on experience with the same tools and approaches used in industry.
At the University of East London, you’ll have access to modern labs, computing suites, and open-access IT facilities. You’ll get to work with programming environments, cloud platforms, and data tools throughout your studies. The teaching style blends lectures, tutorials, and practical labs, all supported by Moodle (UEL’s virtual learning environment), so you always have resources and guidance at your fingertips.
In your final year, you’ll take on a major project that gives you the chance to lead your own data science or AI solution from start to finish. There’s also the option to take a placement year, giving you valuable industry experience before you graduate.
Here’s what experiential learning looks like in this programme:
Work in computer labs and IT suites with open-access PCs and loan laptops, so you’re never limited by hardware.
Use Moodle, UEL’s online learning platform, to access lecture notes, coursework, discussion forums, and resources anytime.
Take part in hands-on labs and programming workshops where you’ll write, test, and debug your own code instead of just observing.
Collaborate on group projects, dividing tasks such as data preprocessing, modelling, and evaluation, and bringing everything together as a team.
Lead a major final-year capstone project, designing, building, and evaluating your own data science or AI solution.
Choose an optional placement year between your second and third year to gain real-world industry experience and professional contacts.
Work with real datasets and advanced tools, exploring big data infrastructure, cloud computing, and AI techniques like deep learning and natural language processing.
Benefit from UEL’s industry connections with partners like Microsoft, AWS, Cisco, and CompTIA, giving you exposure to the tools and standards used in today’s workplaces.
Tap into UEL’s library and digital resources, with access to books, journals, datasets, and computing support for your projects.
Attend guest lectures, industry talks, and networking events, where professionals share insights into current challenges and trends in data science and AI.
Upon graduation, you’ll be in a strong position to step directly into high-impact tech roles or specialise further in AI. Many graduates move into careers such as Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, AI Engineer, or Data Analyst—with competitive starting salaries in the tech sector.
