4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
This degree is deeply practical and experiential — it combines outdoor adventure sports with education theory, coaching, leadership, and environmental learning. It’s perfect if you love adventure, want to lead others in the outdoors, or are passionate about education through nature and activity.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
In your first year, you build the fundamentals of outdoor education: you study modules on participant performance in adventure sports, anatomy and physiology, and sport & exercise psychology, giving you a strong foundation in how the body and mind work in challenging environments. You also take a Professional Skills module to develop your academic, communication, and personal development abilities. Alongside theory, you begin practicing core adventure skills such as climbing, canoeing, or forest schools, and reflect on how to teach or coach them in real settings.
Year 2
The second year gives you opportunities to specialise. You engage with advanced pedagogical and sport science principles, exploring how to design and deliver adventure education in practice. Modules include applied meteorology (how weather affects outdoor learning), performance enhancement techniques, and management issues in adventure education, helping you link leadership, safety, and learning.
Year 3 (Sandwich Year)
This is a work-based year. You go on a sandwich placement where you can work in outdoor or adventure education providers — these may be in the UK or internationally. Past students have taught in countries like Norway, Sri Lanka, and China in adventure schools, expeditions, or coaching organisations.
Year 4
In your final year, you complete a dissertation or major research project, exploring a topic of your choice related to outdoor education, coaching, or environmental learning. You also study advanced modules in pedagogy, research methods, and possibly extreme environment physiology (how the body adapts to challenging environments).
Focus Areas
Adventure sport coaching and education
Environmental and outdoor learning
Safety, leadership, and risk management in outdoor settings
Pedagogical theory and facilitation of group learning
Physiology, psychology, and performance under environmental stress

Learning Outcomes
After graduating, you will be capable of designing, leading, and facilitating outdoor education programmes; coaching adventure sports; managing risk and teaching in diverse environments; applying theory to real outdoor settings; and conducting independent research on outdoor education, wellbeing, or performance.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
Your sandwich year gives you professional experience in the outdoor education field. On top of that, the degree is aligned with national governing body awards: you can gain certifications such as British Canoeing, RYA powerboat awards, Mountain Bike Instructor awards, and more, within the structure of your course.
