4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The BEng (Hons) Aeronautical Engineering with Placement Year at Staffordshire University is a four-year, campus-based course that is appropriate for students wishing to specialise in aircraft design, flight deck systems, and propulsion. The course combines robust engineering theory with industrial experience, including a year in industry, and places special emphasis on modern fly-by-wire systems and pilot–computer interfaces.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1: You will develop a sound engineering background with modules in Applications of Electrical and Electronic Engineering 1, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering Principles, Engineering Thermofluids, Engineering Design and Practice, and Engineering Mathematics 1.
Year 2: You will progress to key aeronautical subjects, including Engineering Mathematics 2, Engineering Product Commercialisation, Control Systems Analysis, Flight Dynamics and Control, Mechanical Design & Structures, and Aerodynamics and Propulsion.
Year 3 (Placement Year): You’ll spend a year working in the aerospace industry, gaining real-world experience, developing professional networks, and applying your academic knowledge in practice. The placement is supported by the university’s dedicated team and is designed to enhance your employability.
Year 4: You’ll specialise with advanced modules such as Aircraft Design Group Project, Aerospace Engineering Applications, Applied Computational Fluid Dynamics, Structural Analysis and FEA, and complete an Engineering Project. Optional modules may include Pilot Studies or Manufacturing Operations.
Focus areas: Flight deck design, pilot–computer interfaces, propulsion systems, aerodynamics, structures, computational fluid dynamics, UAVs, automation, sustainability.
Learning outcomes: Knowledge of the principles of aeronautical engineering, hands-on design and analysis, high-level problem-solving, teamwork, project management, and aerospace industry career preparation.
Professional alignment (accreditation): Mapped to Engineering Council standards; enables advancement to Chartered Engineer status.
Reputation (employability rankings): Graduates have secured employment with British Airways, Etihad, RAF, Virgin, Rolls Royce, General Electric, Augusta Westland, Airbus Helicopters, and Eurocopter.
At Staffordshire University, engineering students benefit from a suite of state-of-the-art, professional-standard facilities designed to develop both technical and hands-on skills for real-world problem-solving. You’ll have access to the thermofluids and aeronautical lab featuring a computerised wind tunnel and a flight simulator, as well as the Reverse Engineering Lab, Renewable Energy Lab, and a CAD Modelling Lab. The £1.3 million Smart Zone is a highlight, spanning two floors, it offers dedicated workshops, high-end computing, 3D printing, augmented and blended reality technologies, and collaborative maker spaces. Here’s how you’ll gain practical experience and industry-ready expertise:
Thermofluids and aeronautical lab with a computerised wind tunnel and flight simulator
Reverse Engineering Laboratory with 3D scanning and additive manufacturing (PolyJet, FDM, 3DP)
Renewable Energy Lab with live testing, Power Systems Lab, and Thin Film Lab
Professional laser cutting (Trotec Speedy 400) for industrial practice manufacturing
CAD Modelling Labs that mimic actual engineering practice
3D Printing Bureau with multiple printers (Mojo, Up Box, Markforged Onyx One, Formlab 3, Stratasys J55) for resin, metal, carbon fibre, and clay
Engineering Laboratories with state-of-the-art software and hardware
Smart Zone: collaborative workshops, maker spaces, and state-of-the-art digital/immersive technologies
High-end computing facilities for simulation and design
Support from internationally recognised researchers and industry-experienced staff
