BEng Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering With Foundation Year

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Wrexham Glyndwr University

Program Overview

The Wrexham Glyndwr University BEng (Hons) Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering with Foundation Year is a four-year, on-campus program of study that prepares students for university-level education and a career in the aerospace and mechanical engineering fields. The foundation year builds foundational skills in mechanical and design engineering, and subsequent years offer technical and practical skills in both disciplines in depth.

Curriculum structure:

  • Foundation Year: You'll have a grounding in all aspects of engineering and design, including Analytical Methods for Engineering, The Skills You Need, Design and Technology, Mechanical Science, Electrical and Electronic Science, and Contextual Studies. The year establishes you for the technical challenge of degree-level study.

  • Year 1 (Level 4): You’ll study Introduction to Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Science, CAD and Production Science, Materials and Environment, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Professional Development, and Modern Aircraft Technology. You’ll also gain hands-on experience in labs and workshops, building core engineering competencies.

  • Year 2 (Level 5): You will enhance your understanding with modules such as Engineering Futures – Research, Ethics and Sustainability, Thermo-Fluid and Propulsion, Further Engineering Mathematics, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Mechanics, Structures & FEA, and Flight Mechanics, Avionics and Control. This year focuses on advanced design, analysis, and business skills.

  • Year 3 (Level 6): You'll develop critical understanding and application of higher-level topics such as Mechanical Engineering Modelling & Simulation, Aerodynamics, Aircraft Design & Flight Stability, and complete a personal Project (Honours). Optional modules are Advanced Structures and Vibrations or Professional Engineering, so you can tailor your learning.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flight mechanics, avionics, CAD, manufacturing, thermodynamics, materials, engineering mathematics.

Learning outcomes: Developing engineering fundamentals, advanced problem-solving, design and analysis in the laboratory, group work, project management, and readiness for aerospace and manufacturing sectors.

Reputation (employability rankings): Strong industry links with companies such as Airbus and Raytheon; lecturing staff with extensive industrial experience.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll gain practical skills in state-of-the-art facilities, including subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels, the Merlin Flight Simulator, and the Advanced Composite Training and Development Centre at Broughton. The curriculum integrates CAD and simulation software (ANSYS, Abaqus, MATLAB, Simulink), rapid prototyping, and a 3D laser scanner. You’ll design and test aircraft, work on real-world projects, and develop manufacturing skills in modern workshops. Experiential highlights include:

  • Merlin Flight Simulator for design and testing

  • Subsonic and supersonic wind tunnel facilities

  • Advanced Composite Training and Development Centre

  • Rapid prototyping and specialist manufacturing systems simulation

  • 3D laser scanner for advanced measurement

  • Access to industry-standard software: ANSYS, Abaqus, MATLAB, Simulink

  • Industry-experienced teaching team

  • Opportunities for industrial placement or foundation year support
