BEng Aerospace Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Brunel University

Program Overview

The Brunel University BEng Aerospace Engineering is a hands-on, accredited degree that will provide you with the technical expertise and awareness of the global aerospace industry's needs for its engineers. The program is ideal for students who would like to have a sound basis in engineering with the opportunity to work in advanced facilities and use industry-standard software.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You learn core engineering subjects such as Engineering Mathematics and Programming, Structures and Materials, Fluids, and Technical Drawing. Lab sessions and digital fabrication workshops provide you with hands-on experience in practical aerospace engineering and design software.

  • Year 2: It progresses to more advanced subjects such as Flight Mechanics & Aircraft Design, Mechatronics and Control Engineering, and Aerospace Structures. You study using industry software and participate in group design projects and flight simulation sessions.

  • Year 3: You’ll deepen your expertise in Aircraft Propulsion, Flight Testing and Analysis, and undertake an individual research or design project. Access to full-motion flight simulators, wind tunnels, and materials testing labs supports your practical learning and final project work.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, flight mechanics, structures, materials, aircraft design, mechatronics, control engineering.

Learning outcomes: Design and analyse aerospace vehicles, apply experimental and computational techniques, use industry-standard software, and demonstrate professional readiness.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Reputation (employability rankings): Ranked 2nd in London for early career progression in Aerospace Engineering (Guardian University Guide 2025).

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Brunel University, Aerospace Engineering students have hands-on experience using specialist laboratories and industry-leading software that mirror current workplace standards. You'll work alongside experienced lab technicians as you design, build, and test everything from fixed-wing and multi-rotor aircraft to gliders and airships. The labs are equipped with a range of aerodynamic equipment and specialist measurement devices, so you'll get hands-on experience that's directly applicable to industry needs. You're also encouraged to work with students from other engineering disciplines, so you'll get even more exposure to cross-disciplinary projects and ideas. You will have access to:

  • Subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels for aerodynamics testing and experiments

  • Anechoic chamber with quiet open jet wind tunnel for aeroacoustics testing with industry-standard microphone arrays and laser-based Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)

  • Computer labs with specialist software: AutoCAD, Catia, Creo (CAD), Matlab, Ansys

  • Project design and build stage practical support from laboratory technicians

  • Opportunities to design, build, and test a variety of aircraft types using industry-standard tools

  • Application of specialist measurement techniques to a wide range of Mach and Reynolds number applications

  • Potential for collaboration with students from other engineering departments and the use of other engineering labs
