BEng Aerospace Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Kingston University London

Program Overview

The BEng Aerospace Engineering at Kingston University London offers a dynamic mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience of aircraft and spacecraft systems. The program is ideal for students interested in developing, designing, and testing aerospace technologies, and it equips you for a career in both civil and military aviation.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You’ll build a foundation in analytical subjects such as mathematics, structures, dynamics, electronics, thermodynamics, and engineering applications. Key modules include Introduction to Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Design and Manufacture, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics and Materials, and Engineering Mathematics I. Early exposure to professional engineering practice is provided through the Navigate for the Professional Engineer module.

  • Year 2: You’ll dive into specialised aerospace topics, including Aerodynamics and Propulsion, Computer Aided Aerospace Engineering Design, Aerospace Electronics and Control Systems, and Aerospace Structures, Materials and Vibrations. The curriculum also features Aircraft Performance and Design, and a project management module where you’ll apply principles to real-world aerospace design challenges.

  • Year 3: You’ll advance your expertise with modules like Further Aerodynamics, Further Aerospace Structures, and Flight Dynamics and Propulsion. The year includes a major Individual Project, Applied Business Management, and the Aircraft Design Project. You’ll also tackle advanced topics in computational techniques and participate in group design projects that simulate industry practice.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, dynamics, materials, aerospace systems, electronics, control systems, project management, design engineering.

Learning outcomes: Expertise in aerospace principles, advanced problem-solving, proficiency in engineering software, teamwork, project management, and preparation for professional careers in aerospace industries.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), leading to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings): Graduates are employed by major employers such as Boeing, BAE Systems, Qinetiq, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Thales, Lockheed Martin, and British Airways. Kingston's engineering courses have a reputation for good employability and industry connections.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Kingston’s Roehampton Vale campus, you’ll gain practical skills in a modern environment with cutting-edge technology. Facilities include a fully equipped rocket propulsion test lab, flight simulator, wind tunnels, mission control room, and advanced 3D printers. The curriculum features industry-standard software, hands-on projects, and a flight test course onboard a flying laboratory aircraft. You’ll also have opportunities for industrial placements and to participate in the Formula Student Competition, designing and building a race car. Key experiential learning opportunities include:

  • Rocket propulsion test lab for live rocket testing

  • Manufacturing workshop with CNC machines

  • 3D rapid prototype printers for model evaluation

  • Mission control room with high-performance PCs

  • Flight simulator for real-time design testing

  • Large-scale wind tunnels and laser Doppler anemometry

  • Group design projects and industry-simulated assignments

  • Utilisation of satellite ground stations and advanced metrology equipment

  • An optional industrial placement year for hands-on industry experience

  • Participation in the Formula Student Competition
