BEng Honours in Aerospace Engineering Sandwich

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Queens University Belfast

Program Overview

BEng Honours in Aerospace Engineering (Sandwich) at Queen's University Belfast is a four-year, campus programme with an integrated year-long industrial placement. The programme is appropriate for students who are interested in aircraft, spacecraft, and higher engineering with a blend of theoretical and practice-based education in aerospace systems, structure, and design.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You will study core engineering concepts and maths, undertake a team-based professional engineering project, and study Engineering CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software. The year is designed to establish core skills and introduce you to real-world engineering through practical build and design projects.

  • Year 2: This year consists of senior-level engineering science subjects such as dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and strength of materials. Group design exercises and specialized lab programs enable you to demonstrate technical ability and reinforce theoretical concepts by putting them into practice.

  • Year 3 (Placement): Spend a full year on an industrial placement with a suitable aerospace company, supported by the School's placement officer. The placement includes a 12-week pre-placement course and offers an average salary of £21,000. Placement credits are recorded on your degree transcript, giving you a competitive edge.

  • Year 4: You'll take specialist coursework and do an independent research project, getting deeply involved with aerospace engineering design and development. This year emphasises advanced subjects and enables you to use your expertise to solve real-world problems.

Specialist areas: Aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, avionics, aircraft systems, engineering design, manufacturing, CAD software, flight simulation, project management.

Learning outcomes: Apply scientific and engineering principles, apply industry-standard hardware, conduct independent research, design and analyse aerospace systems, convey technical concepts, and function well within multidisciplinary teams.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society to academic levels for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings): Placed #9 in the UK for Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering (The Complete University Guide 2025). 91% of Queen's graduates are in employment or further study 15 months after graduating.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You will be able to use Queen's world-class facilities, including student working spaces with flexibility to suit your needs, a students' prototyping studio, and a bespoke Aerospace Engineering design studio with 3D printing and laser cutting capabilities. The School has state-of-the-art teaching laboratories, a flight simulator, and the Whitehead Aeronautical Laboratory with low- and high-speed wind tunnels. You will also have access to state-of-the-art characterisation labs for thermal, mechanical, and microscopic analysis, a £1M composites research lab, high-load structural test equipment, and a well-equipped engineering workshop with CNC machining, robotics, and polymer processing. The course comprises:

  • Flexible student workspace and project rooms

  • Student prototyping workshop with laser cutting and 3D printer

  • Dedicated computer suite with current engineering software

  • Teaching laboratories with structural testing, manufacturing, and flight simulator facilities

  • Whitehead Aeronautical Laboratory with low- and high-speed wind tunnels
