The three-year full-time on-campus BEng Honours in Aerospace Engineering provides a strong foundation in engineering technologies to next-generation aerospace products. It is suitable for students who are ready to combine scientific principles with practical engineering involving the design, development, and servicing of sophisticated aerospace systems.
Structure of the curriculum:
Year 1: You’ll be introduced to core engineering principles and mathematics, participate in a team-based professional engineering project, and learn Engineering CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software. This year focuses on developing foundational technical and teamwork skills through practical design exercises and group projects.
Year 2: You will develop your skills with modules in dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and strength of materials. Group design exercises and a specialist laboratory programme support theoretical understanding, with two lab weeks for hands-on experiments and technical capability development.
Year 3: Specialised and advanced coursework is complemented by an individual research project in aerospace engineering design and development. You’ll engage in in-depth study, project management, and presentations, supported by academic supervision and exposure to industry practices through field trips and lectures by industrial experts.
Focus areas: Aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, avionics, aircraft systems, engineering design, manufacturing, CAD software, project management.
Learning outcomes: Apply engineering principles, use industry-standard software tools, conduct independent research, design and analyse aerospace systems, present technical information, and work effectively in teams.
Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society, meeting requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Reputation (employability rankings): Ranked #9 in the UK for Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering (The Complete University Guide 2025).
You will be able to use Queen's world-class facilities, including student working spaces with flexibility to suit your needs, a students' prototyping studio, and a bespoke Aerospace Engineering design studio with 3D printing and laser cutting capabilities.
