MEng Aerospace Engineering with Study Abroad

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Bristol

Program Overview

The MEng Aerospace Engineering with Study Abroad at the University of Bristol is a four-year program that is structured to incorporate robust engineering training with a period of international study at an approved partner institution. The program is appropriate for students who need a global perspective of aerospace with the study of aerodynamics, structures, dynamics, and advanced systems.

Curruculum structure:

  • Year 1: Students learn fundamental concepts in aerodynamics, structures and materials, and dynamics and control. Important subjects include introduction to aerodynamics and engineering mathematics, supported by laboratory classes and design-build-test projects.

  • Year 2: Fundamental principles are further developed through courses in systems engineering and materials science. Practical courses, group projects, and further lab sessions are completed, with a focus on teamwork and presentation.

  • Year 3: Year abroad spent at an English-speaking partner university (e.g., Sweden, Netherlands, USA, Singapore, Australia) with similar content as in Bristol's curriculum. Students extend their global outlook and learn to adapt to new study settings.

  • Year 4: Returning to Bristol, students complete an industry-driven group design project (e.g., hydrogen-powered aircraft, UAVs, or space exploration) and select from specialist optional units. Independent research is also on the cards with access to world-class facilities.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, Structures and Materials, Dynamics and Control, Systems and Design

Learning outcomes: Apply advanced engineering principles to aerospace challenges, design and analyze aircraft and spacecraft systems, collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams, communicate complex technical concepts clearly

Accreditation: This programme is fully accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), facilitating the path to Chartered Engineer status.

Reputation: University of Bristol is consistently ranked among the UK’s top-performing universities for employability and engineering, with strong aerospace industry connections.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You will gain practical experience in Bristol's cutting-edge laboratories and facilities, including wind tunnels, flight simulators, and advanced materials laboratories. Design-build-test projects, individual and group research projects, and a large group design project in collaboration with industry partners like Airbus and Leonardo are included in the program. The overseas year provides unique exposure to international aerospace research and teaching environments.

  • Access to wind tunnels, flight simulators, and advanced composite materials laboratories

  • Design-build-test projects and group design projects with industry collaboration

  • Individual research project in Year 3 (abroad)

  • Study at partner universities in Sweden, the Netherlands, the US, Singapore, or Australia

  • Industry engagement coordinated by the Industrial Liaison Office

  • Use of industry-standard software and digital tools

  • Opportunities for networking with international aerospace companies

  • Support from Bristol's Centre for Study Abroad and Global Opportunities team
