BEng Hons Aerospace Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Surrey

Program Overview

The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering at the University of Surrey is a three-year, on-campus program offering a broad foundation in engineering with opportunities to specialise in later years. You’ll study advanced materials, aerodynamics, propulsion, space systems, and the latest computational and simulation tools. The program is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), providing a pathway to Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partial Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You’ll develop a strong base in mathematics, statistics, natural sciences, and engineering principles through core modules. Practical laboratory and workshop skills are built with hands-on sessions, and you’ll begin using engineering software for computer-aided design (CAD), finite element analysis, and Matlab. Team-based projects introduce you to engineering design and problem-solving.

  • Year 2: You’ll advance to specialist modules in aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, and systems engineering. Group design modules and laboratory work deepen your analytical and technical skills. You’ll use project management tools, develop digital capabilities, and engage in sustainability-focused design challenges. Optional study exchange opportunities are available.

  • Year 3: You’ll select from optional modules to tailor your degree and complete an individual research project, applying your knowledge to a complex aerospace engineering problem. Advanced modules cover computational modelling, risk management, engineering management, and systems integration. You’ll further develop your leadership, communication, and professional skills in preparation for graduate roles or further study.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, space systems, computational modelling, engineering management.

Learning outcomes: Apply mathematics and engineering principles to complex problems, use computational and analytical techniques, design solutions considering societal and environmental needs, apply laboratory and workshop skills, communicate effectively, manage projects, and demonstrate ethical and inclusive engineering practice.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS); fully meets requirements for IEng and partially for CEng registration.

Reputation (employability rankings): Ranked 4th in the UK (Shanghai Global Rankings 2024); 14th in the UK for Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering (Complete University Guide 2025); 96% of mechanical engineering sciences graduates go on to employment or further study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll gain practical skills in Surrey’s state-of-the-art wind-tunnel research facilities, advanced laboratories, and the Surrey Space Centre. The program features hands-on laboratory sessions, group design projects, and opportunities to join award-winning student competition teams (UAS Challenge, Team Peryton). You’ll use digital tools like Matlab, CAD, and finite element analysis, and have access to:

  • Wind-tunnel research facilities

  • SpaceCraft at Surrey Space Centre: docking simulators, vibration tables, ground station for mission control, Helmholtz coil facility, and vacuum chambers for propulsion testing

  • Advanced materials and structures labs

  • Access to Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre for gas-turbine research

  • Professional Training placements and industry-led seminars

  • Group and individual design projects with project management tools

  • Opportunities for study exchange and international collaboration
