BEng Hons Biomedical Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Anglia Ruskin University Chelmsford

Program Overview

The BEng Biomedical Engineering course offers a well-rounded education in the field, diving into essential subjects like human anatomy, physiology, biological structures, and applied engineering mathematics right from the first year.

  • In Year 1, you'll get an introduction to biomedical engineering, electronics, embedded systems, and biological sciences, with a special emphasis on human motion biomechanics and tissue engineering.
  • Year 2, you'll tackle real-world challenges in areas like microelectronics, robotics, signal processing, and biomaterials. This year also features collaborative Ruskin Modules designed to address societal issues.
  • By Year 3, you'll engage in advanced studies focusing on human motion modeling, tissue repair, tissue engineering, robotics, and machine learning. You'll work on group projects and an independent research project under the guidance of faculty members.

As for assessments, you'll encounter a mix of exams, lab reports, presentations, computer-based assessments, quizzes, and in-class tests.

You'll also benefit from state-of-the-art labs, award-winning IT and library facilities, and plenty of hands-on opportunities to boost your employability

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • In your second year, you'll dive into real-world challenges, taking on projects in microelectronics and robotics design. You'll also explore topics in materials science and biomedical engineering, focusing on medical technology and rehabilitation devices.
  • As you reach your final year, you'll embark on a capstone independent research project, guided by a faculty member.
  • If you choose the "with-industry" option, you'll have the chance to complete a one-year placement at a MedTech or HealthTech company, or even in a hospital. This experience will help you connect your academic knowledge with real-world applications.
  • You'll gain hands-on lab experience with cutting-edge technologies to create medical devices, all while honing your problem-solving and critical-thinking skills through a project-based approach.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Pursue a career in medical device development, clinical engineering, biomechanics, biomaterials, rehabilitation engineering, or pharmaceutical technology.

  • Opportunities in industries such as healthcare, medical imaging, diagnostics, prosthetics, and wearable health technologies.

  • Further academic study through taught master's degrees (e.g., MSc Biomedical Engineering, MSc Medical Physics), research degrees (MPhil/PhD), or medical school entry for qualified candidates.

  • Potential to register as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with an accredited MEng or appropriate combination of BEng and MSc, enhancing professional standing.
