Program Overview

The BEng (Hons) Biomedical Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University is a 3-year full-time undergraduate program, with an option for a 4-year pathway including a paid industry placement or a foundation year for those needing preparatory study. This professionally relevant program is designed to equip students with core engineering skills alongside specialized biomedical knowledge. From the first semester, students engage in team-based design-and-build projects, gaining real-world problem-solving experience.

Located in central Manchester, students benefit from MMU’s modern laboratories, access to digital manufacturing technologies, and input from industry professionals. The course balances engineering theory with applied content in areas such as biomechanics, rehabilitation, sports science, and medical device design, ensuring graduates are ready for employment in a wide range of sectors.

Course overview:

  • Year 1: Electrical Engineering Principles, Project Skills, Desing Project, Engineering Mathematics

  • Year 2: Engineering fluids, Solid mechanics, Group desing project, Control Engineering

  • Year 3: Biotechnology, Individual Project, Structural Analysis, Project Design and Implementation

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Team-based design projects beginning in Year 1

  • Major projects at the end of each academic year

  • Optional year-long industry placement after Year 2

  • External professional input and industry visits embedded in the curriculum

  • PPE, lab consumables, and compulsory visit costs fully covered by the department
