Program Overview

The 4-year BEng (Hons) Biomedical Engineering degree, including a sandwich placement year, prepares you to apply professional engineering knowledge to biological systems. You'll study areas such as:

  • Rehabilitation engineering (prosthetics/orthotics)

  • Biomaterials and implant design

  • Tissue engineering and wound repair

  • Genomic coding and genetic engineering

  • Medical technology (design and manufacturing)

Teaching is informed by the latest research and delivered by experienced medical engineers and clinical scientists. You'll also gain practical experience in state-of-the-art labs and insight from industry partners. The placement year helps you build skills and professional connections.

A 3-year BEng version without the placement year is also available. Teaching includes lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, field trips, and self-study, with a wide range of modules to keep career options open.

 

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Projects in the Second and Third Year.
  • You will obtain real-world training in their cutting-edge engineering labs and professional insight from top industry partners.
  • The industrial placement year gives you the chance to develop important relationships while improving your abilities and self-assurance.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Pursue a career in medical device development, clinical engineering, biomechanics, biomaterials, rehabilitation engineering, or pharmaceutical technology.

  • Opportunities in industries such as healthcare, medical imaging, diagnostics, prosthetics, and wearable health technologies.

  • Further academic study through taught master's degrees (e.g., MSc Biomedical Engineering, MSc Medical Physics), research degrees (MPhil/PhD), or medical school entry for qualified candidates.

  • Potential to register as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with an accredited MEng or appropriate combination of BEng and MSc, enhancing professional standing.

  • Entrepreneurial opportunities in health-tech startups or innovation hubs focused on biomedical solutions.
