BEng Hons Biomedical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Ulster University

Program Overview

The BEng in Biomedical Engineering is all about blending biology with engineering to create amazing things like medical devices, artificial organs, and even surgical robots. Throughout the program, students dive into fascinating subjects such as biomechanics, biomaterials, tissue engineering, and medical technology.

  • In the first year, they get a solid foundation with key topics like mathematics, physics, and mechanical engineering.
  • As you move into Year 2, students broaden their expertise in areas like medical devices, biomaterials, and medical electronics.
  • Year 3 is particularly exciting because it offers an optional paid placement in clinical, industrial, or academic environments, allowing students to put their classroom knowledge into practice in real-world situations.
  • Year 4 dives into advanced topics like medical sensor technologies, biomaterials, and nanotechnology, wrapping up with an Honours Research Project that showcases everything they’ve learned.

There’s also a fantastic chance to study abroad for an extended period outside the UK and Republic of Ireland, which not only deepens their academic insights but also helps them build valuable educational and cultural connections. For those interested, there’s an option to study in the USA, where they can pick up business and management skills while forging educational and social ties.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Compulsory Placement Year (Year 3): Students have to take on a paid placement in clinical, industrial, or academic environments. This hands-on experience helps students connect their academic knowledge to real-world situations, hone their professional skills, and expand their industry contacts.
  • Study Abroad Opportunities: Students have the chance to spend an extended period studying outside the UK and the Republic of Ireland, which enriches their academic journey and broadens their cultural perspective. There's also an option to study in the USA to gain valuable business and management skills. Keep in mind that getting into these programs involves a competitive selection process.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Pursue a career in medical device development, clinical engineering, biomechanics, biomaterials, rehabilitation engineering, or pharmaceutical technology.

  • Opportunities in industries such as healthcare, medical imaging, diagnostics, prosthetics, and wearable health technologies.

  • Further academic study through taught master's degrees (e.g., MSc Biomedical Engineering, MSc Medical Physics), research degrees (MPhil/PhD), or medical school entry for qualified candidates.

  • Potential to register as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with an accredited MEng or appropriate combination of BEng and MSc, enhancing professional standing.

  • Entrepreneurial opportunities in health-tech startups or innovation hubs focused on biomedical solutions.
