Program Overview

The BEng (Hons) Biomedical Engineering at the University of Bolton is a professionally accredited, hands-on degree designed in collaboration with healthcare and engineering industries. This three-year course equips students with the practical and theoretical knowledge needed to design, develop, and maintain medical technologies that improve patient care. Emphasis is placed on real-world projects, small group learning, and industry engagement.

Students benefit from close links with local hospitals and engineering firms, as well as the opportunity to participate in national competitions such as the IMechE Design Challenge. With a focus on innovation, the program explores areas such as tissue engineering, biomechanics, and biomaterials using cutting-edge facilities.

  • Year 1-3 Themes:

    • Biomedical Engineering Fundamentals: Molecular Principles, Medical Sensory Devices, Clinical Anatomy

    • Core Engineering Principles: Mechanics, Control Systems, Programming

    • Specialised Modules: Biomechatronics, Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine

    • Professional Development: Group and individual projects, Enterprise in Engineering

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Annual IMechE Challenge: National-level design and engineering competition.

  • Project-Based Modules: Hands-on projects using Bolton’s high-spec equipment.

  • Industry Links: Live briefs from local healthcare employers.

  • Laboratory Training: Tissue engineering, additive manufacturing, biomaterials, and sensors.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Pathway to CEng or IEng status through accredited program.

  • Strong foundation for master's or doctoral study in biomedical or clinical engineering.

  • Eligible for postgraduate study such as MSc Biomedical Engineering or MSc Physician Associate Studies

  • Average earnings: £25,000, 15 months after the course
