The University of Bradford

Program Overview

The University of Bradford’s BEng (Hons) Civil and Structural Engineering with Integrated Foundation Year and Placement Year is a well-rounded program designed to prepare students thoroughly for a career in civil and structural engineering. It suits students who want a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals with the added benefit of professional work experience through a placement year, building confidence and skills for future employment.

Curriculum structure

The foundation year focuses on essential subjects such as Foundation Mechanics, Foundation Physics, Fundamentals of Materials, Foundation Mathematics 1 and 2, and Information and Communication Technology. This year is designed to foster core scientific and mathematical skills, along with professional skills like teamwork and communication, facilitating a smooth transition into degree-level study.

In the first year, students study Computer Aided Engineering, Design Build and Test (Civil and Structural), Electronics and Mechanics, Mathematical Methods and Applications, Engineering Materials, and Thermofluids. This stage introduces fundamental engineering concepts and practical design skills, laying the groundwork for civil and structural focus.

The second year deepens knowledge with modules such as Engineering Mathematics and Machine Learning, Soil Mechanics, Water Engineering, Structural Mechanics and Analysis, Structural Design Project, and Design of Steel and Concrete Structures. Students gain hands-on experience through design projects and build critical analytical skills.

The placement year provides invaluable industry experience, allowing students to apply academic learning in real-world settings, build professional networks, and develop their career readiness.

In the final year, students study Advanced Steel and Concrete Design, Geotechnical and Civil Engineering Design, Feasibility Study, Sustainability in the Built Environment, and complete an Individual Research Project. Advanced technical and management skills are emphasized, preparing graduates for engineering leadership roles.

Focus areas

Structural design, geotechnical engineering, water engineering, sustainable infrastructure, project management, materials science.

Learning outcomes

Develop expertise in design and analysis of civil engineering structures; apply sustainability and safety principles; execute project management; communicate effectively with stakeholders; and integrate professional engineering standards.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators on behalf of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE), and Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), meeting educational requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status and partly for Chartered Engineer (CEng).
