5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The University of Bradford’s BEng (Hons) Civil and Structural Engineering with Integrated Foundation Year and Placement Year is a well-rounded program designed to prepare students thoroughly for a career in civil and structural engineering. It suits students who want a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals with the added benefit of professional work experience through a placement year, building confidence and skills for future employment.
Curriculum structure
Foundation Year -Students build core knowledge in mathematics, physics, and engineering fundamentals. Modules like Foundation Mechanics, Foundation Mathematics 1 & 2, and Materials and Manufacture ensure readiness for degree-level study.
Year 1 Students gain an introduction to civil engineering principles through Engineering Mechanics, Civil Engineering Materials, and Geology and Soil Mechanics. These develop problem-solving and applied knowledge for construction challenges.
Year 2-This stage focuses on structural and analytical skills. Core modules such as Structural Mechanics, Hydraulics, and Surveying train students in designing and assessing engineering systems.
Placement Year- Students spend a year in industry applying classroom learning to real projects. This enhances employability, networking, and professional skills.
Year 3- Advanced topics such as Structural Analysis and Design, Geotechnical Engineering, and Transportation Studies are studied. Students also complete a group project, linking design with sustainable solutions.
Year 4 -The final year develops leadership and innovation with modules like Advanced Structural Design, Project Management and Sustainability, and a major Individual Project. This prepares graduates for professional accreditation and industry roles.
Focus areas
Structural design, geotechnical engineering, water engineering, sustainable infrastructure, project management, materials science.
Learning outcomes
Develop expertise in design and analysis of civil engineering structures; apply sustainability and safety principles; execute project management; communicate effectively with stakeholders; and integrate professional engineering standards.
Professional alignment (accreditation)
Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators on behalf of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE), and Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), meeting educational requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status and partly for Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Reputation (employability rankings)
Ranked 7th in the UK for Civil Engineering by the Guardian University Guide 2022, Bradford graduates benefit from strong employer links, practical learning, and high employment rates post-graduation.
You'll begin in supportive Faculty of Engineering and Digital Technologies environment, where you'll access modern laboratories and workshops to develop core skills before progressing to advanced facilities and ultimately applying your knowledge during a dedicated placement year.
Here’s how you’ll develop your practical engineering skills throughout your journey:
Foundation Year Workshops: You'll begin with practical sessions in our engineering workshops, developing essential hands-on skills through targeted projects and experiments that build engineering intuition and confidence.
Industrial Placement Year: You'll spend a salaried year working with major companies in the construction and engineering sectors, applying your academic knowledge to real projects and developing professional competencies.
Industry-Standard Software: You'll develop skills in essential professional tools, including AutoCAD for technical drawing, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and structural analysis software used in civil engineering design.
Bradford Design Projects: You'll work on progressive group design projects throughout your degree, tackling increasingly complex structural engineering challenges and developing crucial teamwork skills.
Structures Laboratory: You'll conduct experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern testing equipment for analysing structural components and material performance.
Geotechnical Engineering Equipment: You'll test soil properties and foundation behavior using our geotechnical testing apparatus, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.
Graduates are well-prepared for careers in civil and structural engineering, construction, and infrastructure management. Typical roles include Civil Engineer, Structural Engineer, Site Engineer, and Project Manager. Students gain both academic expertise and industry readiness through placement experience:
University services: Careers and Employability Service offers one-to-one guidance, CV support, and employer networking.
Employment stats: 100% of Civil Engineering students go on to work or further study within 15 months (HESA).
Salary figures: Average starting salary for civil engineers is around £28,000–£32,000.
Industry partnerships: Strong links with employers like Arup, Mott MacDonald, and local councils provide placement and project opportunities.
Accreditation: Accredited by JBM (ICE, IStructE, CIHT, IHE), offering a pathway to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Graduate outcomes: Alumni contribute to major infrastructure, transport, and sustainability projects worldwide.
Further Academic Progression:
Students can continue to MSc programs in Civil and Structural Engineering, Project Management, or pursue PhD research in advanced engineering fields.
