Year 2: Students expand their technical knowledge in Hydraulics, Geotechnics, and Structural Engineering, with integrated project work linking theory to real-world applications.

Year 3: Learning focuses on advanced topics such as Transportation Engineering, Soil Mechanics, and Construction Management, with emphasis on sustainable and modern engineering practices.

Year 4 (Final Year): Students complete an Individual Project and study specialist modules including Advanced Structural Analysis, Water Engineering, and Professional Practice, preparing for graduate employment and professional accreditation.

Focus areas:
Structural engineering, materials science, fluid mechanics, geotechnics, construction management, sustainability.

Learning outcomes:
Solid engineering fundamentals, practical design and analysis skills, research capabilities, project management competence, industry readiness, and sustainability awareness.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
The degree is professionally accredited, meeting the requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with leading institutions such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Reputation (employability rankings):
Liverpool John Moores University is ranked 16th in the UK for construction, surveying and planning courses (The Guardian 2025) and 15th for general engineering degrees (The Times UK University Rankings 2025), supported by strong employer links and excellent graduate employability.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is expertly designed to build your practical engineering skills and confidence from the ground up, creating a solid foundation for degree-level studies regardless of your previous background. Your foundation year will introduce you to hands-on learning in our Byrom Street laboratories and specialist engineering workshops, where you'll develop core skills using equipment and software that prepares you for more advanced studies.

Here’s how you’ll develop your practical engineering skills:

  • Foundation Year Workshops: You'll begin with practical sessions in our engineering workshops, developing essential hands-on skills through targeted projects and experiments that build engineering intuition.

  • Introductory Software Training: You'll learn fundamental engineering software including AutoCAD for technical drawing and basic modelling tools, building digital skills that prepare you for degree-level studies.

  • Laboratory Introduction: You'll gain early access to our civil engineering laboratories, with introductory sessions that help you understand testing procedures and equipment operation in a supported environment.

  • Byrom Street Facilities: You'll learn in our well-equipped engineering building that provides dedicated workshop spaces, computing labs, and study areas designed for foundation year students.

  • Project-Based Learning: Your foundation year includes practical projects that develop problem-solving skills and engineering thinking, preparing you for more complex design challenges in subsequent years.
