BEng Hons Civil Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Loughborough University

Program Overview

Loughborough University’s BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering program offers a robust education blending solid theoretical foundations with practical design experience, perfect for students driven to create and maintain vital infrastructure. It suits those eager to tackle real-world engineering challenges while gaining teamwork, project management, and communication skills essential for a successful career in civil engineering.

Curriculum structure

Year 1: In the first year, students build a solid foundation in civil engineering through modules such as Fluid Mechanics, Structural Analysis and Mechanics 1 & 2, Engineering Materials, and Principles of Design and Construction. These modules introduce essential concepts in fluid dynamics, structural behaviour, material properties, and construction principles, providing a comprehensive understanding of the field.

Year 2: The second year delves deeper into specialised areas with modules like Further Structural Analysis and Geotechnical Design, Construction Contracts, Law and Finance, and Research Dissertation. Students engage in more complex design and analysis tasks, exploring advanced structural and geotechnical topics while also developing skills in construction law, finance, and research methodologies.

Year 3: In the final year, students undertake a substantial Research Dissertation, allowing them to apply their accumulated knowledge to a significant engineering problem. This year emphasises independent research, critical thinking, and the application of engineering principles to real-world challenges, preparing students for professional practice or further study.

Focus areas: Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transport and infrastructure, project management, fluid mechanics.

Learning outcomes: Ability to analyse, design and manage civil engineering projects; proficiency in technical communication and teamwork; critical understanding of sustainability and engineering ethics.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators on behalf of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors, partially meeting requirements for Chartered Engineer status.

Reputation (employability rankings): Loughborough ranks within the top 101-150 globally for Civil Engineering in the QS World University Rankings, with graduates highly sought after by leading engineering employers worldwide

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is built on a 'learning by doing' philosophy, ensuring you graduate with the hands-on experience and practical skills that top employers in the construction and engineering sectors actively seek. You'll have access to our outstanding facilities in the West Park Teaching Hub and the Stewart Miller Building, which house modern civil engineering laboratories, including our heavy structures lab, hydraulics lab, and geotechnics research centre.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll develop proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for technical drawing, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and LUSAS for finite element analysis, ensuring you're industry-ready.

  • Live Design Projects: You'll work on real-world briefs and annual design challenges, often in collaboration with industry partners, tackling current civil engineering problems and developing practical solutions.

  • Structures Laboratory: You'll test materials and structural components using our modern testing equipment, including a strong floor and reaction wall for large-scale testing, gaining hands-on understanding of structural behavior.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab with its flow channels and wave generation equipment to model hydraulic processes and environmental systems.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory: You'll work with advanced soil testing apparatus, including triaxial cells and a consolidation testing suite, to investigate ground conditions and foundation design.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from Loughborough’s BEng Civil Engineering often move into rewarding careers such as Civil Engineer, Structural Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, or Project Manager—often stepping directly into challenging roles with top-tier firms. Because your degree is enriched with hands-on design work, field trips, and direct industry involvement, you'll graduate with credibility, confidence, and connections that can set you apart.

Here’s how Loughborough ensures you’re ready to make your mark:
