MEng Hons Civil Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Loughborough University

Program Overview

Loughborough University’s MEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree offers an advanced, integrated master’s level education designed for students who want to become leaders in the civil engineering field. The course combines rigorous academic theory with extensive design projects and real-world problem-solving, preparing students for complex engineering challenges and professional success.

Curriculum structure

Year 1: The first year focuses on building a strong foundation in core civil engineering principles. Students engage in modules such as Structural Forms and Stress Analysis, Mathematical Modelling of Structures, Mechanical and Mathematical Principles of Fluid Mechanics, and Engineering Materials for Construction. These courses introduce students to the fundamental concepts of structural analysis, fluid mechanics, and material properties, setting the stage for more advanced studies in subsequent years.

Year 2: In the second year, students delve deeper into specialized areas of civil engineering. Modules include Open Channel Flow Design and Analysis, Soil Mechanics and Geology, and Management of Design and Construction. These courses expand students' understanding of hydraulic systems, geotechnical engineering, and construction management, equipping them with the knowledge to design and manage complex engineering projects.

Year 3: The third year emphasizes practical application and professional development. Students undertake modules such as Collaborative Practice in the Built Environment and Geomatics Engineering Surveying 1, which focus on teamwork, leadership, and surveying techniques essential for real-world engineering practice. This year also includes opportunities for industrial placements, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in the field.

Year 4: The final year of the MEng program involves advanced study and specialization. Students engage in modules like Advanced Structural Analysis, Sustainable Infrastructure Design, and Project Management in Civil Engineering. These courses challenge students to apply their knowledge to complex engineering problems, preparing them for leadership roles in the civil engineering industry. Additionally, students complete a comprehensive design project, synthesizing their learning throughout the program.
