MEng Civil Engineering (Integrated Masters)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of East London

Program Overview

The Integrated Masters (MEng) in Civil Engineering at UEL offers a rigorous, industry-aligned path that combines core civil engineering with advanced design, research, and digital tools. It’s suited to students aiming for Chartered Engineer status who want hands-on project work, exposure to modern infrastructure challenges, and opportunities in structures, transport, water and ground engineering.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you build essential engineering skills through modules including Engineering Materials, Applied Mathematics & Computing, Thermofluids, Engineering Mechanics, and Land & Construction Surveying. These give you strong grounding in mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics, materials behaviour, and surveying — all vital for later specialization.

Year 2

In Year 2 you move into more specialized technical content: you’ll study Structural Analysis & Element Design, Ground Engineering, Engineering Surveying, Water Engineering, and Advanced Mathematics & Modelling. This year increases your design capability, your understanding of soil/ground behaviours, and strengthens your ability to model and design structural elements.

Year 3

Back from placement (if taken), Year 3 focuses on core advanced modules such as Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transport Infrastructure Engineering, and an early Capstone Project. You’ll engage in more challenging design and analysis, understanding how structures behave under loads, soil-structure interactions, and designing transport infrastructure.

Final Year (Year 4)

In your final year you take modules like Structural Dynamics & Stability, Design in Steel & Concrete, Highway & Railway Engineering, Environmental Sustainable Engineering & Logistics, Soil Structure Engineering, and Intelligent Transport Systems. You’ll also undertake the major Capstone Project and Applied Research and Engineering Practice II, bringing together all your skills in a research/design context—and preparing you for professional practice or further study.

Focus areas

Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water engineering, transport infrastructure, digital design, project management.

Learning outcomes

Design and manage civil engineering works; apply advanced analysis and digital tools; solve complex engineering problems; communicate and lead multidisciplinary teams; graduate ready for professional roles or further study.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Fully accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (ICE, IStructE, CIHT, IHE), meeting requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings)

UEL engineering graduates are well regarded for their practical skills and employability, often securing roles with leading employers or progressing to further study. A high proportion use what they learn on the course in their careers, supported by strong industry links and modern facilities.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is built around a practical, industry-focused approach to learning, ensuring you develop the real-world skills and confidence to excel as a civil engineer from the very start of your career. You'll have access to our excellent facilities in the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering at our Docklands Campus, which houses modern civil engineering laboratories, including our structures lab, materials testing equipment, and hydraulics facilities.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for technical drawing, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and specialist analysis software used in civil engineering design.

  • UEL Design Projects: A key feature of your degree is the series of group design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering problems, often with an urban focus, developing crucial project management and teamwork skills.

  • Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern testing frames and equipment for analysing structural components and material performance.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics equipment with flow channels and measurement tools to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Equipment: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our geotechnical testing apparatus, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles, particularly relevant to London's complex geology.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from the UEL MEng Civil Engineering programme are well placed to move into roles such as Structural Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, Transport Engineer, or Water/Environmental Engineer, because the degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) and designed with strong industry input. Their qualification meets the educational base for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, which means they enter the workforce not just with solid theory, but with recognised professional credibility:

  • UEL runs a Careers Guarantee service that gives students early exposure to employers, live projects, placements, and strong support around CVs, interviews and career planning.

  • Salary data for all engineering graduates at UEL indicates medians of around £27,000 15 months after graduation (rising over time) with realistic earning potential increasing with experience.

  • The programme features industry links via its Advisory Board and collaboration with major firms; previous graduates have gone on to work for Balfour Beatty, Transport for London, Canary Wharf Group, Atkins, among others.

  • Accreditation by JBM ensures the degree satisfies the academic requirements for a Chartered Engineer (CEng), which is highly valued across civil engineering employment sectors.

  • Most graduates move into professional engineering roles or related technical roles in consultancy, contracting, infrastructure, environmental or transport sectors; many benefit from the placement / employer-engagement built into the programme.
