BEng Hons Civil Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Hertfordshire

Program Overview

The University of Hertfordshire’s BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering with Foundation Year is designed for students seeking a strong entry pathway into civil engineering who may not yet have the traditional qualifications for direct degree entry. This four-year program offers a solid foundation in engineering principles and practical skills during the foundation year to prepare students fully for the academic demands of the BEng.

Curriculum structure

Year 1: In year one of the degree, core civil engineering principles are studied through modules like Civil Engineering Materials, Site Surveying and Setting Out, Principles of Sustainable Design and Construction, Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics, Fundamentals of Civil Engineering Structural Analysis, and Engineering Mathematics. Practical applications and group projects develop hands-on skills.

Year 2: The second year builds technical knowledge in Structural Mechanics, Soil Mechanics, Hydrology and Open Channel Hydraulics, Civil Engineering Materials 2, Civil Engineering Structural Design, Surveying and Highway Engineering, and Construction and Building Management. Students focus on design and analysis supported by software tools and real-world applications.

Year 3: The final year offers advanced modules such as Geotechnical Design, Advanced Structural Analysis and Design, Sustainable Engineering, an Industry Group Design Project, and an Individual Civil Engineering Project. Optional modules include Flood Management, Highway and Traffic Engineering, and a placement year is offered to enhance employability.

Focus areas

Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydrodynamics, construction management, sustainable design.

Learning outcomes

Apply civil engineering principles to design and manage infrastructure; use software and analytical tools; communicate complex engineering concepts; manage projects responsibly; and integrate sustainability.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Fully accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation), meeting educational requirements for both Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings)

Hertfordshire enjoys strong partnerships with industry and the Building Research Establishment (BRE), providing access to cutting-edge facilities and projects. Graduates are highly employable, moving into roles with construction firms, consultancies, and public sector bodies.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You'll have access to our excellent facilities at our College Lane Campus, which houses modern civil engineering laboratories in the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science, including our structures lab, hydraulics equipment, and materials testing facilities, where you can test designs and understand material behaviour.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools, including AutoCAD for technical drawing, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and specialist analysis software used in civil engineering design.

  • Live Project Work: You'll work on real-world briefs set by our industry partners, tackling current civil engineering challenges and developing solutions that meet professional standards.

  • Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern testing frames and equipment for analysing structural components and material performance.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics equipment with flow channels and measurement tools to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Equipment: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our geotechnical testing apparatus, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering programme at the University of Hertfordshire typically embark on careers as structural engineers, design engineers, water engineers, or CAD technicians and enjoy strong employability—with approximately 93% going into work or further study. Median early-career salaries start around £23,000 and grow significantly over time, offering a promising return on your studies.

Progression & Future Opportunities:
Here’s how the course and university support your career launch—and beyond:

  • University Services to Boost Employability

    • Careers and Employment Service: Offers continuous support from day one, including access to Handshake for jobs, placements, and internships, plus CV reviews, career planning, and live-chat support—even up to four years after graduation. Face-to-face and online sessions available through the Hutton and Enterprise Hubs.

  • Employment Statistics & Salary Figures

    • Graduate Outcomes data shows about 93% of BEng Civil Engineering graduates go into employment or further study.

    • Median earnings start at £23,000 in the first year post-graduation, rising to £29,600 in year three, and approximately £37,600 by year five.

    • Unistats reports an average starting salary of around £26,000 for civil engineering graduates at this university.

    • University-specific LEO data confirms the £23,000 starting median salary and an unemployment rate of just 8%, with student satisfaction at 100% for the course.

  • University–Industry Partnerships

    • The programme offers a strategic partnership with the world-renowned BRE (Building Research Establishment), granting students access to specialised facilities, projects, and lectures.

    • The university positions itself as one of 20 University Enterprise Zones, benefiting from strong employer engagement in curriculum development, networking, placements, and real-world input.

  • Long-Term Accreditation Value

    • The degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM)—including ICE, IStructE, IHE, and CIHT—fully meeting the educational base for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status and partially covering the requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng). A further accredited learning programme would be needed for full CEng.  Graduation Outcomes

    • You’ll be ready for career roles such as building control surveyor, water engineer, CAD technician, design engineer, or structural engineer. With links to BRE and entrepreneurs via the Enterprise Zone, plus high satisfaction and low unemployment, you graduate in a strong professional position.

Further Academic Progression:
You may choose to deepen your expertise and move toward full Chartered Engineer (CEng) accreditation through postgraduate study. A popular route is pursuing an MEng in Civil Engineering or a related advanced master’s degree, which often includes an optional sandwich year and is designed to meet CEng educational requirements. With your JBM-accredited BEng as a foundation, this further study sets you on a fast track toward senior professional status.
