Civil and Structural Engineering MEng, BEng

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Leeds

Program Overview

This degree combines civil and structural engineering fundamentals with hands-on design projects, preparing you to tackle real infrastructure challenges. It suits students who enjoy problem-solving, sustainability, and want a clear route to a professional engineering career.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
Core modules such as Structural Analysis and Design, Materials, Water and Soils, and Engineering Mathematics give you the scientific and mathematical base, supported by an Integrated Design Project.

Year 2
You’ll advance with Structural Design and Materials 1, Water Engineering and Geotechnics, and Engineering Mathematics 2. Optional topics like Highway Engineering or Sustainable Engineering Solutions let you shape your interests.

Year 3
Focus shifts to independent work with Structural Design and Materials 2, Water Engineering and Geotechnics 2, and an Individual Research Project. Options include Transport Planning or Wastewater Engineering.

Year 4 (MEng only)
Specialist depth through modules like Advanced Steel & Composite Design and Earthquake Engineering, alongside a major research project and final design project.

Focus areas

Structures; Geotechnics; Water Engineering; Materials; Sustainability; Design Projects

Learning outcomes

Graduates gain strong technical knowledge, problem-solving and design skills, sustainability awareness, and professional teamwork/communication abilities.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) on behalf of the Engineering Council. BEng meets IEng requirements (and partly CEng), while MEng fully meets CEng requirements.

Reputation (employability rankings)

Leeds is a top UK destination for civil engineering, with graduates highly sought after — ranked among the UK’s most targeted by major employers.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students in this programme don’t just learn theory — from early on you’ll be involved in practical sessions, labs, design studios, and real design projects so that you can use the tools, test things, and see how engineering works in realistic settings.

Here are specific experiential-learning features at Leeds:

  • Structures and Materials Laboratories: full-scale rigs for performance testing, a casting shop, curing rooms, sensors & corrosion labs. These are used in team projects like the timber truss project (year 1) and later large‐scale structural design work.

  • Geotechnics Lab: for testing soil behaviour in different environments via group labs.

  • Public Health / Water & Wastewater Labs: includes experimental rigs, clean labs, microbiology labs, aerobiology chambers for environmental and water-related research and student project work.

  • Design Studio & Software Tools: Students work in a collaborative design studio using industry-standard software such as Revit (BIM), IES (dynamic thermal modelling), Robot (structural analysis), and Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Integrated Design Projects: At each level, but especially in second year and beyond, you’ll do group and individual design work — structural design, virtual 3D models, feasibility studies and real client-style design problems

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates move into roles such as Structural Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, Water/Environmental Engineer, and Project Manager. The degree’s strong industry links and accreditation give you a direct path to professional status and excellent employability.

  • Career support: Dedicated Employability & Placements Team plus full Careers Service access.

  • Graduate outcomes: Around 90% in professional work or study within 15 months; average starting salary ~£29,000–£30,000.

  • Industry links: Partnerships with ICE, WSP, Tata Steel, Yorkshire Water, Highways England, and more.

  • Accreditation: JBM-accredited — BEng meets IEng/partial CEng; MEng fully meets CEng.

  • Long-term value: Highly sought after by employers; Leeds is among the UK’s most targeted universities for engineering recruitment.

Further Academic Progression:
Graduates can progress to specialist MScs (e.g. Structural, Water, Geotechnics), pursue PhD research through Leeds’ institutes, or advance towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
