Civil Engineering BEng

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Leeds

Program Overview

This accredited degree equips you to design and manage infrastructure — from buildings to transport and water systems — with a focus on sustainability and safety. It suits students who enjoy problem-solving, design, and applying maths and science in real projects.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
You’ll cover core modules like Architecture and Sustainability, Surveying, Construction Technology and Management, Structural Analysis and Design, Materials, Water and Soils, Engineering Mathematics and Modelling 1, and an Integrated Design Project. This year gives you a solid foundation in maths, materials, structures and basic design, plus experience with field surveying and teamwork.

Year 2
In year two, compulsory study includes Water Engineering and Geotechnics, Engineering Mathematics and Modelling 2, Structural Design and Materials 1, along with an Integrated Design Project 2. You’ll grow your design and analysis skills, learn more about how soils/water behave in engineering settings, stronger mathematical modelling, and begin to work with CAD/BIM and other design tools.

Year 3
Here you deepen your technical specialist skills: Water Engineering and Geotechnics 2, Structural Design and Materials 2, Integrated Design Project 3, and Individual Research Project 1 are core. You’ll also pick optional modules (e.g. Wastewater Engineering, Transport Planning & Modelling) letting you tailor your knowledge. This year pushes you to apply what you’ve learned in real-style design, analysis, and research contexts.

Focus areas- Structures; Geotechnics; Water Engineering; Materials; Sustainability; Design Projects

Learning outcomes- Strong technical knowledge, design and analysis skills, teamwork, digital tools, sustainability awareness, and communication.

Professional alignment- Accredited by the JBM; BEng fully meets IEng and partly CEng requirements.

Reputation- Leeds graduates are highly employable, with strong employer links and industry recognition.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Leeds, civil engineering students don’t just study theory — they apply it through hands-on projects, advanced labs, and industry-standard tools. From your first year, you’ll be immersed in real-world challenges that mirror professional practice, preparing you with both technical and teamwork skills. Here’s how learning goes beyond the classroom:

  • Specialist Laboratories: Access to cutting-edge structures, materials, geotechnics, and water engineering labs for practical testing and experiments.

  • Industry Software: Training with leading design and analysis tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and MATLAB.

  • Group Design Projects: Collaborative, multi-disciplinary projects tackling live civil engineering challenges from conception to design.

  • Field Trips: Site visits and surveying field courses, offering direct exposure to real-world construction and infrastructure.

  • Research Institutes: Opportunities to engage with the Institute for High-Speed Rail and System Integration and the water@leeds research centre.
