Civil Engineering MEng, BEng

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Leeds

Program Overview

If you're someone who likes solving real-world problems, enjoys working on projects, and wants to help build the future — quite literally — then Civil Engineering at Leeds could be a perfect fit. This course gives you a strong mix of technical knowledge, hands-on experience, and real-world design work, all while focusing on sustainability and preparing you for professional accreditation as a Chartered Engineer.

Curriculum structure

Year 1 – Build your foundations
In your first year, you’ll cover all the essentials. You’ll explore topics like Structural Analysis and Design, Materials, Water and Soils, and Surveying and Construction Technology, which give you a solid base in how buildings, bridges and infrastructure are designed and built. You’ll also take part in your first Integrated Design Project, where you’ll apply what you’ve learned in a practical team setting — a real taste of what engineers do.

Year 2 – Go deeper and start to specialise
Now that you’ve got the basics, Year 2 is about strengthening your technical skills. You'll dive into Structural Design and Materials, Water Engineering and Geotechnics, and Engineering Maths and Modelling. These modules introduce you to how things behave under pressure (literally!) — like soil, concrete, and water flow — and how to model real-world systems using maths. Your second design project brings it all together in a collaborative, creative way.

Year 3 – Apply your knowledge in the real world
This year’s all about taking your learning further. You'll tackle more advanced modules like Structural Design and Materials 2 and Water Engineering and Geotechnics 2, while choosing options in areas like transport, public health or sustainability. A big highlight is the Constructionarium, where you actually go out and build scaled-down structures — not just on paper, but in the field. You’ll also start your Individual Research Project, picking a topic that really interests you.

Year 4 (MEng only) – Specialise and stand out
If you’re on the MEng route, your final year lets you tailor your studies to what you're most passionate about. Whether that’s Advanced Concrete Design, Geotechnical Engineering, or even Engineering in Emergencies, you get to dig deeper into your chosen area. You’ll also complete a major research project and your final Integrated Design Project, where you take on a complex engineering challenge and solve it like a pro.

Learning outcomes

By the time you graduate, you’ll know how to design and assess complex engineering systems, work with real data and digital tools, manage ethical and sustainability challenges, and lead teams on major design projects — all the skills employers want in future civil engineers.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

This course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), which means it fully meets the academic requirements for becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng) — a key step in your professional career.

Reputation and employability

Leeds is one of the top 10 universities in the UK for Civil Engineering across multiple league tables, and it’s consistently among the top 5 most targeted by UK employers. You'll graduate with a degree that’s recognised, respected and backed by top research. Plus, the average graduate salary is around £29,000, with plenty of room to grow.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is built on a 'design and do' philosophy, ensuring you graduate not just with theoretical knowledge, but with the hands-on experience and confidence to tackle real-world engineering challenges from day one of your career. You'll learn in our fantastic Sir William Henry Bragg Building, a state-of-the-art facility that houses specialist structures laboratories, concrete testing labs, and hydraulics labs with wave tanks and flumes. Your education is powered by the same industry-standard software used by top global engineering firms, and you'll work on ambitious, real-world projects that bring your learning to life and prepare you for professional practice.

Here’s a closer look at the practical opportunities that define your experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain expert proficiency in essential professional tools like Tekla for Building Information Modelling (BIM), ANSYS for finite element analysis, and Plaxis for geotechnical design, making you industry-ready upon graduation.

  • The Leeds Design Challenge: A cornerstone of your final year is this intensive group project, where you'll work in a team to design a solution to a complex, real-world civil engineering problem, developing crucial project management and teamwork skills.

  • Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with strong floors and modern loading frames, allowing you to test structural components to failure and understand their real-world behavior.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab, featuring a tilting flume and wave generator, to model water flow, sediment transport, and environmental processes central to civil engineering projects.

  • Concrete and Materials Laboratory: You will test and analyse the properties of concrete and other construction materials, gaining practical insight into their performance and durability.

  • Field Trips: The curriculum includes valuable field courses, such as geotechnical site visits to study slope stability and ground conditions, providing crucial real-world context for your studies.

  • Research-Led Facilities: Your practical work is informed by the cutting-edge research conducted within the School of Civil Engineering, particularly in areas like water, public health, and environmental engineering.

  • Placement Opportunities: You can choose to take an optional salaried industrial placement year, gaining invaluable experience with major companies like Arup, Atkins, or Network Rail, with dedicated support from the University's Careers Centre.
