MEng Civil Engineering with Placement

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Surrey

Program Overview

The MEng Civil Engineering at Surrey is an integrated master’s degree combining rigorous engineering theory with hands-on design, sustainability, and industry-relevant case studies. It’s aimed at students who want to graduate not only with deep technical proficiency in structures, hydraulics, geotech, environmental systems, etc., but also be prepared for professional practice through design projects and optional placements.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: In your first year, you’ll build foundations in civil engineering’s core areas: modules such as Mathematics for Engineers, Fluid Mechanics & Pipe Hydraulics, Engineering Geology & Geomechanics, along with Civil Engineering Practice and Materials & Statics

Year 2: In year two, you delve into applied civil and environmental topics: you’ll study modules like Hydraulics & Environmental Quality, Engineering Surveying, Health & Safety, Construction Materials, and maybe Statistical & Numerical Methods

Year 3: Professional Training

Year 4: This year ramps up to more comprehensive and integrated engineering challenges: compulsory modules include Environmental Engineering and Hydrology (ENG3177), Construction, Business and Project Management (ENG3182), and Engineering Sustainable Transportation (ENG3208).

Year 5: In the final year for MEng students, you’ll focus on advanced design, research, innovation, and optional specialisms. Key modules include the Multidisciplinary Design Project (ENGM001), a major capstone where you carry out large‐scale design work, plus others such as Infrastructure Systems, Interdependencies and Resilience or Infrastructure Asset Management; and options like Sustainability and Infrastructure, Building Information Modelling or Geographical Information Science & Remote Sensing

Focus areas

Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water and environmental engineering, construction management, design and project integration.

Learning outcomes

Design, analyse and manage civil engineering projects; apply principles of sustainability and safety; communicate effectively with stakeholders; demonstrate problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Fully accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), and Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES), meeting requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partial Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings)

Ranked in the UK’s top 10 for Civil Engineering and within the top 100 globally (ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2024), Surrey graduates benefit from strong employer connections and high employability rates, with 100% of civils grads in work or further study within 15 months of graduation (HESA 2025).

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is designed to give you an exceptional hands-on education, blending strong theoretical knowledge with practical application from your very first week. You'll have access to our outstanding facilities in the School of Sustainability, Civil and Environmental Engineering, which includes our dedicated structures laboratory, hydraulics laboratory, and geotechnics research equipment that rivals professional industry standards.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for technical drawing, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and LUSAS for finite element analysis, ensuring you're industry-ready upon graduation.

  • Surrey Design Projects: Each year features progressive design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering challenges, developing crucial project management and teamwork skills valued by employers.

  • Structures Laboratory: You'll conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern loading frames and testing equipment for analyzing structural behavior and material performance.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab with its flow channels and wave generation equipment to model water behavior and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory: You'll test soil properties and foundation behavior using our advanced geotechnical testing equipment, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of Surrey’s MEng Civil Engineering move into roles such as Civil Engineer, Structural Engineer, Project Manager, or Environmental/Water Engineer, and are highly employable within a year of graduation:

  • University services: Surrey’s Professional Training (“placement”) programme enables students to gain real industrial experience, often leading to job offers. The Employability & Careers Team supports students with CVs, interviews, employer networking and the Surrey/ICE Scholarship scheme that links students early on with civil engineering firms.

  • Employment stats & salary figures: 100 % of Surrey’s civil engineering graduates are in employment or further study 15 months after graduation. Average salaries are ~ £31,900 for MEng Civil Engineering graduates.

  • University–industry partnerships (specific): Surrey collaborates with companies like BAM Nuttall, Mott MacDonald, WSP, AtkinsRéalis, etc., offers the Surrey/ICE Scholarship scheme, and uses industry-led design case studies to keep curriculum relevant.

  • Long-term accreditation value: The MEng degree is fully accredited and satisfies the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Surrey courses are designed to meet professional standards.

  • Graduation outcomes: Beyond strong job entry rates, Surrey graduates tend to move into meaningful civil engineering roles with opportunities for increasing responsibility; many benefit from placement experience and employer connections which help with early career progression.

Further Academic Progression:
Graduates may choose to pursue specialised postgraduate study (MSc or MRes) in areas tied to civil engineering—such as structural engineering, environmental engineering, water resources, or infrastructure resilience— or they might go into doctoral (PhD) research. Some may also undertake professional certifications (e.g. chartership) or leadership/management courses to broaden their career scope.
